I'd say....
Nice big lump of bar, probably about 3 or 4 inches long, about a couple inches in diamter. Put a M12 hole in it. Get a bit of bar 2ft long in your case, about half inch in diameter, maybe bigger - enough to put an m12 thread on either end anyway. Screw the long bit of bar into your lump of bar and you've got the 'base', then the thread on the other end will take a nut obviously. Get another piece of bar, long enough to hold comfortably, the same diameter as the lump of bar. Could maybe even make it bigger diameter. Drill a hole in it big enough to let it slide up and down the shaft and Robert's your father's brother, a home made sliding hammer. If that all makes sense.

Agreed, gives you something to do when there's no work to be done.

I can see why you'd want to do that, but it's not as if it's something hard to do for starters - it wouldn't be hard to make it to the same quality as one at 30 quid. Plus I'm imagining that he's got the stuff just lying about to do it, so the only thing he's spending on it is time. I used to do the same thing at my old work if I needed any homers doing.
