Right im currently running a 1.6 sport with a lexmaul kit and a few other mods and the car isnt really as fast as id like If it was you would you just spend maybe £500 and stick a decent Xe in there or stay with the 1.6 and look at Cams,Flywheel et etc?

xe will be easyer to drive than a 16xe
wont be thrashing it everywhere as you'll have all the extra torque and imop its a nicer car to drive when the c20xe is in there

re-routing the intake pipe to the passenger side will make a bit of difference

For a road car I'd go for an XE without any hesitation. It's more usable on road than a tuned X16, the extra weight will affect the handling obviously but on road it's probably not gonna be a big deal.

Cams about best bet for that money. My old one had ported polished head, re-profiled cams (so i found out) lightened flywheel, manifold back exhaust still with cat. Was rolling roaded at 130bhp, stuck to side of my mates XE Tigra RR'd at 157 up untill 70-80ish.

Is fuel consumption not a joke when tuning the smallblock engines up to 130bhp or over?

Who cares?
No point in fettling with an engine for power if you have economy concerns IMO...
