Button has allways been a good driver, he just never had a decent car. The 1st time he did have, he's world champion. Go figure.

Merge of threads perhaps?
Nath - Lewis is McLarens 'baby' so although Button will technically be number 1, Hamilton will be the number one in reality. And the car setups and development will favour him, which will cause issues with Button as both drivers have different driving styles. Putting it bluntly, Button is fucked....

They arent going to spend £6m a season on a driver to not give him a car he can perform in. They could of gone out and got another youngster for next to nothing if that was the case.

They've paid 6mil for him because he'll constantly put in solid point scoring results, JB drives like he's in a bobsled.
Since McL took Kovi to replace alonso, they've never had a shot at constructor title - now they'll be looking for WDC and WCC, and it'll almost certainly be LH taking the Drivers one
Button has taken this as it's a payday - and it can promise a competetive car. Brawn won't be anywhere near as strong next year, as they won't have the six race headstart the double diffuser gave them last year. JB has a chance of competing for points, but realistically I don't think he can compete with LH for the championship.
Everyone is a winner, tbh - I don't think JB could win next years WDC in any team, unless perhaps Lewis, Massa and Alonso all retire. At least this way he's getting paid.

I dont think he'll necessarily be fucked, as Cosmo said they wont spend all that money employing him for a laugh. But ultimately the development of the car will be done to suit Hamilton who they are paying even more and have built the team around over the past few years.
They'll be able to do so much to tweak it for Button but there driving styles are quite different so wouldn't imagine it'll be ideal for him.

Button signed because McLaren was the only team interested in paying him any reasonable amount of money. Plus a British team, having two consecutive WDC drivers racing together, it's genius!
I agree Button is a very good driver, give him a decent car and he performs. But the fact remains, McLaren have groomed Hamilton since he was 13. They pay him 12million a year. Both drivers have different driving styles, Button is smooth and likes understeer, Hamilton is agressive and likes arse end oversteer and McLaren can't have development and setups to to favour both styles.
Perhaps saying Button is 'fucked' was a bit OTT, but he's certainly going to be told to make do, and because of this i really can't see how he can challenge the WDC or become a constant finisher on the podium.

After tasting success I can't see button being happy to relinquish any chances, just for another couple of million a year.

Button was asking for 7/8 million, Brawn offered him 4 million and Button turned it down. No other team seems interested in taking Button for what he was asking apart from McLaren who signed a deal for 6, so he didn't have much choice.
And i'm not saying Button is stupid, but you have got to be pretty nieve joining McLaren and thinking you're going in as the No1. Just look at when Alonso joined, he thought he was No1, they favoured Hamilton it went tits up. I'm not saying it will become as extreme as it was when Alonso was at the team, but Button certainly won't be the driver of the team and he will have to make do.

What chance does he have staying at Brawn next year though?
They won this year because they had a part (diffuser) which the other teams thought to be illegal, they won the appeal arguably for PR reasons so Bernie didn't lose his 'rookie team' and then failed to perform with any consistency for the rest of the season.
McLaren, or rather Lewis Hamilton sorted himself out and spent the rest of the season stealing points from RBR allowing Brawns head start to drift to an end of season result.
He'd never win at Brawn next year, McLaren is his best bet - but still a long shot when he's got to park next to LH - the McLaren golden boy.

perfect news
2 english drivers in an english team.
of course lewis will be the no. 1 driver. jenson isn't going to have a hard time though i wouldn't think. kovalainen did seem to get some decent results, just could never get a run of them together.

I think Button will be much closer to Hamilton in terms of pace than many people think, especially with the refuelling ban favouring the drivers who can best manage their tyres on a heavy fuel load. It's going to be very interesting...

Well yeah that's the only thing going for Button, his driving style will help a lot when it comes down to managing tyres, compared to Hamilton who usually wears the rears quite badly. So it might save his arse a few times, but i'm still skeptical about it all.

Brawn actually raised the 8 million once mercedes came onboard, the reason why button didnt take the offer is because of the Mercedes take over of the Brawn GP team and the fact Button does not feature in there plans. Button wanted a multi year deal but was only being offered a 1 year contract, hence why he went to Mclaren on a multi year deal.
The alonso stuff is pure speculation, Alonso was favoured right until Monaco when Hamilton had his outburst in the press conference saying he was the No.2 driver, as he was carrying 5 more laps of fuel than ALonso onboard after qualifying, and the team called him in early during the 1st and 2 nd stops.
From then on the team gave each driver alternating strategies until the Hungary qualifying fiasco, where according to the FIA transcripts Alonso threatened Mclaren team boss Ron Dennis with going to the FIA with the ferrari dossier if he didnt get preferential treatment, not saying its fact but Alonso was no better than Hamilton that year, they both acted like spoilt brats and neither won the title.

An excellent strategy from McLaren. Think how much more interest this will generate in motorsport, and motorsport in the UK.
I also think its ironic Mercedes will now try and put across they are a German team - engines designed and built in the UK, car designed and built in the UK, all by mainly UK staff. The only thing German will be the drivers. If they wanted to go German why not buy BMW/Toyota facilities?

I'm not saying he thinks he'll be No.1. I'm just saying don't write the guy off as just another partner for Hamilton to run reign over.
