i'm looking for a runabout for a year or two so i can save up a bundle of monies for a house.
but i don't really have any ideas on what to get that's going to last me that long.
so far i've seen:
mk3 golf gti
old fiestas
old escorts
a few corsas/saxos/106's etc
but ideally i'd want something with a bit of power or something diesel, not too old either.
don't want something that's going to fall to bits in 6 months.
anyone got any suggestions? nothing too silly as it needs to be sub 500 quid insurance

Saxo mk1 VTS
Or a VTR will be nippy and more insurance and petrol friendly.
Will be a shocker space wise compared to your massive orange car

Well look at a few, theres plenty available. I got mine for £500 needing engine work, spent a few quid on a headgasket kit & sold it for £1500

I would drive one first as they are not for every one. But get past the tinnyness and weird pedals and they are ace. Plus they are dead easy to do all the servicing on yourself etc so that brings that cost down too

How? Jap doesnt break so makes it very cheap. Damo's ESi took hardabuse for a whole year and was sold on for the same money. A saxo wank piece engine will fall out, gearbox break and generally be gash.

Saving or not, going from your new ST to an old £1000 banger is going to be crippling regardless what you think. I've done it myself. It's a buzz at first but you'll regret it.

i do understand that but i'll be saving over 400 quid a month on finance repayments, 16 quid a month on gap insurance, money on tyres (95 quid each, last 6k miles average), tax, car insurance, petrol.
a lot of money that can go into my savings rather than a car that depreciates loads.
