Seen a 1999 model (V reg) Golf GTi 2.0 for sale, looks in decent condition with quite a few extras and 135,000 miles.

It's for sale at £1,100. This seems unusually cheap to me for a MK4 so I'm a bit suspicious. Wouldn't mind going to take a look at it though.

Anything to look for in particular?

It is 10 years old... and petrol.

I remember looking at these recently and seeing a few priced just over a grand.

It's because that engine is a piece of shit, nobody wants a GTi that is slower than a milkfloat.

The mear thought of VW putting a GTi on that underpowered overweight barge of a car is an insult to the GTi badge.

As much power as a Mk1, and as much weight as two Mk1s!!

Steer clear.

Yeah I have heard that the 2.0 lump is pretty poor. I was looking at 1.8t's but this just caught my eye as it is very cheap. TBH, I think I prefer mk2s. Look so much nicer IMO.

Yeah, its a terrible engine.

At least with the 1.6 you KNOW its gonna be slow. The 2.0 is just as slow, but uses a lot more fuel. Terrible engine to put in that car. Its only an 8v too if memory recalls?

Get a mk3 with the ABF engine? 2.0 16v, that's a fairly swift car.

Yeah I know where Howden is. Yeah, you should definately join the org, great group of members who will help you with any issues / questions you have. There are also plenty of ride-outs and weekly meets around here.

I've been looking at the MK3's and there seem to plenty for under a grand. I think I will steer clear of the 2.0 like you guys have said and look for a mk2/mk3. I can't really afford more than a grand because I've got a bike on the road and I'm only on a measly student's part time wage. The mk3's seem to be in the perfect price bracket, I'll have a look around, cheers.

Reasonable cars provided they are pampered and well maintained on all fronts and haven't done huge mileage. That is a terrible engine though, plus the car is a sodding decade old so I don't think it's worth a grand.

In my experience, the 1.4 litre 16 valve engine in the lightest, lowest spec 2 door MK IV with the smaller alloys and lowish profile tires was one of the nicest golfs I drove and was better than any of the 1600s or two litres.

I was in the market for an S3 once, but i could never ever find the colour combo i wanted.

All just silver/black or black/black

Never any reds with silver leather (best combo IMO) or the merlin purple ones were even rarer!
