I'm rethinking my financial situation atm, so thinking about selling my impreza and buying an old bmw 7 series to run for a short while (always had a soft spot for these).. quite a few deals to be had for under a grand and i am quite tempted anyone else know much about these? Or about reliable old barges in general?

You can get a 740 (4.4i V8) with all the toys for about £1500. But not any better than your Impreza for running costs Infact I'd say much worse.

I've read the average mpg is 22..so god knows how bad it would be on short journeys. If I could get away with running a decent one for about 6 months that would be perfect. Hopefully the only running cost would be fuel though

What was the Lexus that James May turned into a cop car? I'd have one of them, it only cost him a grand.

Or a Volvo T5, or a Mercedes perhaps.

Nope they are not bad at all and rarely go wrong.

My cousin had a 740 with M sport spec tv and double glazing

Very efficient engine for a V8 and when converted to LPG he was getting the same running costs of his current 728. His 728 has gone and he is also on the market for a 740i.

Love these barges and you can get them sideways too

T5's are heavy on fuel and insurance. BM's are great cars but again juicy on fuel and if they go wrong are very expense to repair. If expense isn't an issue go for the 750il 5 litre v12 stretched version. They are 18 inches longer, have semi reclining rear seats and more toys than toysrus, lol. The old Lexus 300's are ok but a cheap one will need a lot of money spent on it. The suspension goes softer than an ice cream in summer and they drive like sailing HMS Victory in a storm. Omega estates are ok but suffer the same if your not careful.
