Do you know if it's cable or hydrolic clutch?

Had a similar problem with my brothers van, the clutch cable was stretched so as a temp measure, i just tied a knot in it to get him home

Right, normally i would say clutch is worn. Does the clutch slip? if not, gearbox synchro has gone. Does it do it in all gears if so i would say clutch. Either way, your gonna need the box off so take the box out, check the clutch for wear, if worn replace, if not worn, change box,

put the handbrake on, put it in 5th, start car, raise revs to 2k, let clutch out, if it stalls, your clutch is working.

Sounds like some kinda bearings in the clutch are fucked though mate...next time buy something not french
