hi, i am about to start on a new project, corsa track/rally car. I want to put an x16xe engine init that will be a reasonable spec. I plan to put a mantzel style inlet, proper exhaust and manifold, what i want to know is what cams would i get away with on standard management and pistons ?
obviously mapped ignition and put pocketed pistons with some decent cams would be best, what sort of price for cams, pistons and management would i be looking at ?
any help would be great
thanks

Well If your pocketing out the pistons, Id go for 288's, combined with dbilas pulleys they should run, may be lumpy on idol, to make the most of them though the rev limit will need raised and strengthen the bottom end and have it lightened and balanced.

ok mate cheers for the help, what about if i were to use standard pistons ? yeh they dont rev very high on standard ignition realy, would steel rods be enough or what else needed for strengthening?

288's on std management wouldnt be the best option, go for some 264's if you want to change the cams, or spend the money else where where you will see better gains

so what sort of things should i be doing if i want to see around 150bhp at the fly wheel ? what could i spend money on other than cams (without going down the tb route) that would see better gains ? thanks for all the help so far

150bhp i would do an ITB conversion with aftermarket mangement 2750ish all in, then a decent exhaust manifold and system, should see 150-160bhp

Throttle Bodies really, but for the price, bike carbs set up properly would be awesome as well

ok so throttle bodies would be the way to go, what sort of power would you expect with mantzel inlet, proper system cams and decent managment? wanted to try and not spend on tb if im honest.

well with that lot youg oing to spend:
£1250-1500 on management fitted and mapped
£300 on cams
£150 on verniers
£200ish on an inlet
then you would need it fitting, power wise i would expect a realistic 140-150bhp tops with that. in a real world.

ok the fitting isant a problem as i would do this myself and get the engine dyno run by john toovey who builds my dads engines, i would get him to carry out some head work etc. so would i be looking at 266 cams without pocketed pisions ? also whats the most it could rev with out steel rods ?

think the standard rods can take 8 or 8.5k iirc the crank can take 10k before it needs changing...
best bet for finding that info out is to call SBD

std rods can rev to 8, mine finally gave way at 9200. however if your building an engine with just a manzel inlet then you wont need to rev it to that.
built a few of these now so if you have a budget in mind then let me know and i can spec something up
