Problem is, it's not technically a DP matter because the data doesn't uniquely identify a living individual.

No great surprise for another government agency to be losing/selling/giving away details of people.

what if the engine was different, i.e some sort of engine transplant that uses different oil, surely you could take them to court because they have given out the wrong information

Quite a good application of technology if none of it is personally identifiable.

There are much bigger data protection issues to worry about.

People leaving laptops on trains etc...

They always recommend the wrong type for my car anyway, so it's no use to me

There is no issue with that, its just the car details. We have a similar thing at work called auto part where you bash the reg in and it comes up with make, model, year and engine size and codes, doesnt tell you anything about the owner. Seems the newspapers are making a big deal out of nothing, shocker.

As long as the owner has changed the log book it will pick it up.

Don't see the problem with that tbh. Pretty idea. Wouldn't make me buy it though. Waste of money.

Yes, the same link?

And if you put Mazda RX7 in, it suggests a synthetic, wrong.

Yeah, as synth leaves a residue which spoils the seal and can cause the tips etc to stick.

Mineral burns off completely.

If you look here, the same numpty who put no oil into my first engine, also used synthetic at some point. You can see the goldy looking deposits on the housing:
