My Dad picked up his new Freelander yesterday and has had a half day Landrover Experience thrown in to the deal for my birthday at Coniston Cold near Skipton

I've never done any off roading before, hoping to get an upgrade to a Range Rover as thats what I really want to drive

Anyone else done one of these? My Dads been there before and said its good fun, cant wait!

A Landrover is 10 million times better off road why would you want to drive a range-rover?

It will be mostly off road driving, thats the point of it...

I love Range Rovers and they are still very capable off road so thats why I want to have a go in one if I get chance

You'll be better off in a Defender or Discovery, though.
I've been round the Experience course at Solihull as a passenger, and my Mum's done the full thing as a driver. Really worthwhile.

Range Rover Sport off road!!! Must be a first. They are fairly capable but you've be better off in a Defender or a Disco.

I've done two LR experiences. Both in Disco's. Both as passenger tho. Also toured the factory. Best part was the Landrover Specialist vehicles area where they develop special vehicles for police/army/special forces etc.

I'm sure I'll manage just fine in the RRS! Its got all the gizmos to do it, get a bit of a drive on the road in it as well

had a ride in a rangey off road, and I really never knew a car was capable of such things but it was an absolutely fantastic experience. I'd definitely love to have a go in the drivers seat!

I did one at the end of last year in the Freelander as a total freebie ( think Dad blagged a couple of tickets somehow) it's all quite tame, but a good day out!

Did it this Sunday just gone. It was good and we did do some stuff that was a bit tricky but ultimately it was too tame like you say!

Only got a few pictures and not of all the course. They dont do it justice anyway but I'll put them up seen as though I took them

Would of been good if someone had stood outside taking pics when I was driving up some steep sections in the wooded area as that bit was good

Jeremy Clarkson took the sport off road in the challenger tank challenge. I was suprised how well it stood up;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot6dL2mlO7c

Clare's being using the vogue to do some mild off roading; the hotel's helicopter landing pad is 1/2 mile away through the woods so she picks up any guests flying in using that. I was suprised how well it took to the relatively steep gradients, muddy, wet conditions even on road tyres.

Only thing that causes a problem is the tow bar plate is too low to the ground even with the suspension jacked right up.

Summary at end if you cant be bothered to read this.

Got to drive the Range Rover Sport out on the road to start with. Its torquey as hell and even though its a diesel it still sounds like a V8, awesome engine. I can see the appeal of wafting around in one of these. So comfortable and effortless. I loved it on the road, if I ever find myself in a position that I can afford to spend that kind of money on a car I'd have one in an instant

Then went off road and the instructor spent far too much time driving, we all had a go for 10-15 mins off road but was a bit pissed off we didn't get longer as we even finished half an hour early Learnt how to use the different settings etc. which was interesting, the hill descent is good. Its very capable off road. Had it rocking on 2 wheels at one point, ground the front and rear bumpers out going up a steep hill that had deep ruts halfway up

Had a demonstration of the DSC systems on a slightly sloping grass field to show how it will control you when sliding. Then she turned it off and we just skidded right round. We didn't get to have a go at that bit which I really wanted to cos I wanted to have a go at powersliding it but the instructor said no

I would of been very annoyed if I had paid £175 per person for it but we got it as a freebie so it wasn't too bad.

Anyway the pics, not the best as couldn't really keep getting out all the time.

Latest Range Rover TDV8

Range Rover Sport TDV8 in the middle was the one we were using

Part of the course

Doesn't look steep but it was

When you are inside this it feels like the wing mirror is touching the floor, again looks nothing in the pic

Highest suspension setting

Went up and down these with ease

Summary: It was fun for a freebie and I'm glad I got to do it but there is no way I would pay for it!

I don't understand the appeal of the Range Rover Sport. It was brought out as a budget Range Rover for those who can't afford the real thing, yet they seem to be more desirable to people

I love being out in the missus' vogue; although its a 53 plate, its such a comfortabel car for eating up the miles or going away for a weekend etc. Only problem with her's is that its the perol so terrible as far as fuel economy is concerned.

Also get to drive the boss's Sport quite often and again, the drive is brilliant, especially when towing a big boat behind us.

I'm really tempted by a TDV8 Vogue in the next coupel of years - post facelift model

The diesel wont be much better. The claimed MPG is 25.5 or something like that. I bet it'd be doing more like 20 if that
