Driven one and it's alright but nothing special, but there are lots better cars out there for the money!
It was my mates I drove and she never changed oil (wouldnt know how) or serviced it at all! and it was fine for the time she had it.

Pro's- Good options inside car- leather seats, air con, 6 disc changer. Fairly quick. Can be tuned easily lots on the market for tuning.

Con's- French. Flimsy bodywork. Engines can be noisey even when they are perfectly fine. Handling is as good as you would expect from a sporty french hatch.

I've had one since the start of March this year and it has been 100% reliable. Only problem ive had was a dead battery but thats cos I didn't drive it for over a week.

Does it have any better performnce? i.e engine, suspension, brakes etc? or is it just fancy bumpers and aluminium bits?

Ive owned a 2001 206 Gti 140 for 3 and half years, never had a single problem with it. I bought it with 60 K on the clock and it now has 107K. Engine seems to be bulletproof (touching wood as I type) Sits below 90 degrees and spot on oil pressure wise, coolant temp is always on the mark as well. I give mine an oil change every 6 months and new air filter, its so cheap you cant afford not to do it. Its not as fast over 100 leptons as when I first bought it, but it rarely sees those kinds of situations these days.

It may not be the fastest thing on the road but you can still have a lot of fun and get into trouble with it. You have to remember it came out in 1998 and at the the time it was rated as a great hot hatch, things have moved on now in the power stakes so its mearly a warm hatch. Its great on a twisty road if you keep the engine on the boil and are commited, turns in great, has a bit of body roll but you cant fault it, does suffer from lift off oversteer, but thats never a bad thing. gear change is pretty bad as standard, very long throw so feels quite sloppy, but you get used to it (GTi 180 has a much shorter, tighter throw). The driving position is not the best either takes a while to find a great position.

That said it handles great, stops well and is so cheap to run, I cant fault it. Very well specced, climate control, digital air con, half leather/suede alcantara interior trim, auto wipers, auto lights(on later models). I get around 30-40mpg on a long run. Im sure I hit over 40 mpg on a recent 280 mile drive, but that was keeping at 70 and barely any foot to the floor action.

In my opinion they are a bargain for the price you can pick them up, very underrated car

hardly any 206s had the cut out problem! You are just unlucky to be the owner of one! Ive had a 2001 GTI for 18 months now and theyre good cars if looked after and its never missed a beat tbh.Ive had a couple of sets of arb links but i bought ebay one which were shit so i spent the money on the second set and theyve been fine since. The pre 2001 gti is 137bhp and post 2001 139bhp i think but there is next to no difference between performance. The gti 139 is also not too far off the 180 performance as they are around the 139bhp mark whereas the 180s are around 165bhp.

Dunno about that mate there's a petition on 206info.com where hundreds of people have signed that they have the problem! Also, my mate's wife bought an almost brand new one... had the problem too

It's also the fact that on Watchdog or whatever Peugeot basically said they don't care! Made me really not wanna trust them ever again.

I have a 206 d turbo, and have tested a gti i prefer the diesel over petrol for work circumstances, really smart cars half leather suade, leather steering wheel and other nice suttle touches.

Driven both and personally prefer the diesel after a remap

common faults seem to be the rear axle, but check the rear wheel bearings if slight play change as this is what causes the axle to finally give up im led to believe.

cheers

cheep, tacky, slow, engine start tapping on low millage models, manifolds fall apart making a grunting noise, rear lamps let in water, abs blocks rust up and cause abs faults, drop links fail easilly, cant really fink of any more common faults we get with them,
also they dont have a spare wheel
