Just been reading a topic on another forum about supercar ownership & how many people are now opting for a fractional ownership by spreading the cost of depreciating assets amongst many....
i.e - For a yearly fee you get 60 (or whatever the deal) days in your choice of supercars.....book what you want when you want, no additional costs except the petrol.
quote: I'm just under the £100k mark and decided to join a supercar club instead of buying a supercar. It costs me less than the depreciation on a 911 and I can enjoy many cars, days and miles - with total peace of mind.
So far I've rented all sorts of 911, the cayman, and the aston martin vantage. What a lot of fun! I'm working on a blog too.
I've booked the 911 Turbo for next week followed by the Ferrari 430 Cab for a trip to Paris. They're getting the new DBS in a few weeks and I can't wait to get my hands on it!!

Thoughts?

looked into something like this a few years ago...
There is a club located just by my old flat in Ebinburgh. Cant r'ber its name but something like edinburgh car club, It was more classics than brand new supercars. They had some ferarris etc tough.
Pay X amount, get Y points..... nicer cars and longer loans cost more points.

Some of the ex porsche/ferrari/lambo owners on PH seem to think its the way to go!!
I suppose if your spending I dunno - 70k on a porsche and only plan to take it out on dry weekends or whatever it would be a worthy cause.
If you plan to buy & need to use as a daily then not so much.
Just found myself in a interesting read about how people afford to run supercars, got input from £M earning company directors fretting about losing 30k a year through a depreciating sports car to a school teacher that always prommised herself a ferrari before she was 40 so went out and got one (albeit an old one) Then theres guys saying buy the right car & it wont cost you a penny in depreciation - 993TT, 996GT3 & beyond F40's etc!!
Interesting read - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=63&t=527667&mid=171972&i=0&nmt=How%20do%20you%20afford%20supercars?&mid=171972
12 pages long though & im not even half way through yet!!

Its a good idea, as people who could never afford those sorts of cars could have a taste of them at their own leisure for a small fee (in comparison to the purchase price)
The downside ofcourse is that you dont own the car, and if i had a 997 gt2 for a week or a gallardo cabby for a trip to france i would find it so hard to give it back and not hang myself lol

So for £14,250 a year you could basically get a group one car for 19 weeks a year? And in that time you can only fo 5000 miles?

You only get limited miles in them from what I can remember.
And he says its cheaper than the depreciation on a 911...but he can use that 911 365 days of the year, here he can only use it 60days.
I bet if he worked it out in depreciation per day used (even if he only used the 911 half of the year) it would be a much better investment.

From P1...
quote: What is the Collision Damage Waiver?
| P1 is the only car club in the UK to offer a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). This is an optional extra designed to waive the insurance excess in the event of an incident. Each CDW is valid for one use and lasts for twelve months. If used, a member may take out another CDW at P1’s discretion, dependant upon the conditions of the incident.
Im betting that costs a fair whack, and if you dont take it out the excess could be enough to bankrupt some people

What a lot of them are saying is that if they buy a 120k Lambo brand new, then it costs them £30k in a year. With this thing they can book whatever tasty car they want for time they have booked off to enjoy it in. That way they dont have a 120k car sat in the garage half the time.
I just thought it was an interesting concept
Take my scenario, Im only home 3/5's of the weekends, around 30 a year so could have a porsche/ferrari/aston to blat about on the weekends for 5-7k a year!?
Just some food for thought, ive absolutelly no plans of joining a supercar club I just thought it muight be an interesting debate!!

In your case where you are only home 3 out of 5 weekends and dont intend to ever use it during the week the it's a cheaper alternative.
For anyone else who intends to use the car for more than approx 100 days a year then its not that worthwhile imo.

I guess I just like the idea that you can drive a whole list of prestige marques for the cost of depreciation of buying a new mondeo every year!!
Everyones different, some folk spend £k's each year following a football team or I dunno pulling a tap'o'the-range caravan around the country. I like the idea of supercar club!!
Would be nice to have a sensible-ish car for the weekday & have something a bit special arrive every weekend!!

I doubt many spend anywhere near £15k following their football team every year
Using the example you gave, £15k over 60 days is £250 a day, and you're limited to about 5k miles arent you? So £30k depreciation @ £250 a day gives you 120 days.
So if you used it more than 120 days a year, or more than 5k miles, then its more cost effective to buy your own IMO.

Maybe not 15k....5k-10k...........if you go to all games including euro comp's etc maybe the occasional national aswell....sure you could cloc up a heafty bill!!
Everyone at my work has either a caravan or a motorhome.....feck that You know how much they cost!!
10k on a hobbie per year isnt all that much if you have disposable income & dont care a lot for saving for the future!!

Seems like a similar way people 'own' aircraft. Works very well in that field.

That's a good mantra Aircraft don't depreciate, but my god they cost a lot to own in fees and maintenance
