Having driven hire cars abroad on skiing holidays they are all legally bound to have winter tyres fitted. The grip from these in the ice and snow is amazing and the accident rate in countries that legally enforce winter tyre fitment is far lower than the ones that don't.
I've been reviewing tyres tonight and will be placing an order for some of these in the next few months as we lead up to winter.
They are made by Nokian and are a mostly unheard of in this country but a top brand in snowy climes.
each 185/60/15 tyre is around £50 delivered. Considering the extra safety they provide and the increase in grip I'm already sold on them.
So who else is going for it?
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Any summer tyre is shit in the cold as the rubber isn't maliable at the low temps. Those tyres will make your EF1s feel like shit in comparison when the temp drops below 5

Excellent excuse for heating them up then.
Actually though, I'd say out winter isn't harsh enough to warrant a new set of tyres. But if your tyres were shot then it's a kind of sensible choice, but what happens when summer comes round?

You need spare rims to make it worthwhile, otherwise you'll be messing around paying for the tyres to be swapped over.

My mum gets winter tyres fitted to all her cars at the start of November. Amazing difference when theres snow and ice on the ground.

I continue driving to the conditions like I do in any other season.
If we ever get weeks of snow a year I'll consider winter tyres.

i'll be considering them this year - mainly because my drive to work is cross country, and the roads are never sodding gritted. Plus if it snows like it did earlier this year i dont want a repeat of the ass clenching 21 mile drive into work in 6-7 inches of heavy snow
