This is my latest detail - an ~ 18 month old VW Toureg with 24k on the clock, AG Lifeshine'd and maintained by the supermarket car washers! Stage 2 detail and interior valet it is then...

I was joined again by my assistant Stu for the day - and a massive help he was too!

Befores:

Doesn't look too bad up close, but as per usual my photos don't really show it

First up wheels, tyres and arches:

The diamond cut wheels were all starting to suffer from lacquer corrosion so were cleaned using G101 and a small amount of smart wheels and agitated with various brushes. Tyres and arches with G101 and scrubbed.

The arches were also treated with some much needed Tardis:

Next the car was foamed with a G101 & Duet mix to remove any remnants of the Lifeshine, this was rinsed off and the bodywork washed using AS Duet. This was again rinsed off and dried using Elite Car Care ultra plush towels and AS Tango as a drying aid.

The car was treated with Tardis, then Stu clayed the entire car using BH Regular Clay and a custom mix lube. The state of the clay after just a small section of the boot:

I then attacked the headlights with Tardis to remove the leftovers of some beam deflectors:

Before:

After:

Stu then snapped a few shots of the defects whilst I started taping up trim and taking paint readings:

All paint was original and healthy reading between 100 and 140microns.

I set out original correction with 3M FCP and matching pad as I knew the paint would be rock solid. But something wasn't right - the swirls were removed easy enough, but it left the paint very hazy and despite working thoroughly it just kept hologramming.

So I tried FCP but on a 3M yellow polishing pad and this didn't have enough cut to it. Extra fine also didn't. So back to the drawing board!!

Time to go for my old favourite - Megs 83. On a Megs burgandy cutting pad. This worked fairly well - it left a few RDS but the gloss and clarity to the finish was how I wanted it.

50/50:

To make up for lost time I gave Stu some on the job DA tutorial - he refined the panels with Megs 80 on a Sonus green polishing pad then glazed them with Poorboys Black Hole on an Elite Car Care red finishing pad. And a great job of it he did too - took to it like a pro :thumb:

In amongst various jobs the interior was tackled - Stu had hoovered the interior and cleaned the mats with G101. Whilst Stu was waxing the car (with Collinite 476s) I finished the interior - cleaning and conditioning the leather with AS Leather cleaner, cleaning the plastics with AS Multifresh and dressing the mats with Aerospace 303. Wood trim was polished with AS Stardust.

Other bits were also done during the day - arches with AS Finish, Tyres with AS Finish, Black plastic trim with CG New Look Trim Gel, Glass with Nielsens Glass Blue, Door shuts with AS Tango. Wheels sealed with Poorboys wheel sealant.

Stu then took some end result shots:

Thanks for looking. Comments, constructive criticism and questions welcome as per usual!

P.S - Time taken 18 hours between us and we were knakered lol - hence why there aren't so many correction shots.

Looks like it needs further correction in the last pic TBH!

Don't know if you go to that amount of correction in a stage 2 detail?

That's as well as it would correct within a safe limit of clearcoat removal - those are RDS (Random Deep Scratches) I usually would try to remove these too but to break down the swirls on this thing involved a lot of agressive cutting as it was. I could have worked it harder to remove the RDS but then there would be less paint to work with in the future which isn't the way I work

Stage 2 Detail onwards is to correct as much as possible in a safe manner. There may be a more extreme detail available next year for those who want near on perfection regardless of the consequences... I'm reviewing services for next year now lol.
