Bless the Ford fan boys on the comments below the article
Ford took the RS over to the 'Ring in confidence of beating the Megane, bless that it's only 9 seconds faster than a crap handling Astra with its revolutionary 'Revoknuckle' it's fully redesigned LSD, fully independent rear suspension and 300bhp.
Most over-rated car ever.

i bet the focus would beat the renault if it was fully stripped, tracktyres and plastic windows, the ford is fully packed with luxury
edit- so it was a pointless race

it is 300bhp one has been reported to have 276bhp on a rolling road then when remapped it gained 60bhp
also i dont think you can compare the r26r to the rs, its a different car altogether! i would have the r26r over the rs everytime, unless you stripped the rs put a cage in it a it came with road legal track tyres.....

I still like them, would have got one if Ford hadnt been pricks about releasing them, prices going up before any hitting the road etc.
Might get Jade a used one in a few years time.
I couldnt care less how quick it is round a track, its not a track car!!

Is that a certain company that were doing demo's at Fordfair on their rolling road? I heard them say it there and was a bit dubious...

As said, the R26.R is in a different league to the RS. But still, it was Ford who wanted to break the record...

This is old news...
Who cares if its been overhyped.
If it had recieved less attention from the media, would that have made it a better car? No.
It is as good as it is, and that is what matters.
Okay, so its 10 seconds slower than a stripped out and gaged track focused car. Does that really surprise anyone?
Other than the fact that its a hot hatch, the R26.R is by no means comparable to the Focus RS.

I'd also like to add that my dad was out in the RS at the weekend where he had a little race with a Boxster S, and he beat that no problem. Of course some of it may be down to driver ability, but these stats are also interesting to look at...
Focus RS 300 bhp
Boxster S 297 bhp
Nordschleife:
RS - 8:26 Boxster S - 8:35
Hockenheim Short:
RS - 1:17.8 Boxster S - 1:15.6
So the Focus is better on one track, but the Porsche is better on another.
Different track, different conditions, different day you will get different results.
Also, the Focus RS was 8.2 seconds quicker than the R26.R round Autocar's Wet Handling Track.

Doesn't the R26R come with semi-slick (and therefore dry weather tyres) though?

The semi-slicks is an option and i'm not 100% sure if they were fitted but i'm guessing they probably were. Regardless, my point is that we live in the UK where I reckon its wet more than its dry

I totally agree, but then you could argue that the Renault would then match it if it was remapped to 300 bhp and 325 lbs/ft of torque.

Do track times REALLY matter to people?
Probably the last deciding factor in me choosing a car is its time around the Nurburgring! Ive never been, I will probably never go and I am not a good enough driver to come anywhere near the time a professional racing driver would acheive who knows the track like the top of his todger!

hows a big fat focus gonna beat a stripped / caged megane made from french plastic - well proofs in the pudding as it didnt. but wouldnt say its over rated though, if the focus is over rated so is an astra vxr.
megan-r isnt going to attract the same driver as a focus rs, its a different car. more of a drivers car

Not really important unless you can drive as well. They should ferry a random selection of owners over there and average the lap times off that.

i love ford cars BUT i said from the start that the RS would be crap.
ford went the cheaper route instead of developing a decent 4wd modern cosworth.
renaults are tinny enough without being made tinny on purpose!

I think people are missing the point that Ford set out to beat the Megane:
quote:
In conjunction with German magazine Sport-Auto, Ford took its double-hot hatch to the 'Ring with the intention of beating the Megane's time of 8m17s, a record for front-wheel-drive production cars set last summer.
The fact that they expected to beat the Megane deals them a blow, no matter how much more track orientated the car is.
Megane R26R lap times:
http://www.fastestlaps.com/car4886c2337c47d.html
Mk2 FRS:
http://www.fastestlaps.com/car486e32318475a.html
On all the circuits they have both done the Megane is quicker, except from the wet handling one which the Megane is 8 secs out in - must have been using the 888's.
