but sony have never released a date that it was supposed to be out, so how can it get knocked back? it isnt sonys fault that companies like amazon are putting bogus dates up that cant be met.

I think they can do it as you haven't recieved the product.

There was a play fuck-up a while back with pricing and they cancelled the orders made on that as well

They can honour the advertised price or they can refuse to sell you the product at the advertised price. The latter is what they've done.
