You proberly might TBH,But it will be high mileage but if it's looked after them Engine's can last a long time.

I'll think you struggle to find anything with the goal you've just set
Have a look at some Volvo's they are craite train pulling machines

The Golf be made even qicker with a Tuning box and will deffo most likely have more Torque then the 270 you have now which will make it quicker.

In that price range even the best engines will only remap to 200bhp, most probably below that, to get near 270 any of them will need at least a couple of grand thrown at them.

yes, wouldnt be a coupe though but that would be my first choice as long as its the 204bhp version.

if it has to be a hatch then one of those ibiza cupra diesel things, 160bhp with brembos etc only downside is they are group 17

As John said, to get 270 (from a VAG 1.9TDi) you will be looking at around 3-4k on engine mods alone. You can get about 260 from a PD130 with a hybrid pd150 turbo, zorst, filter, FMIC and water/meth injection and all mapped to suit. The PD150 engines, will need same mods too

Fabia VRS with a wee remap would be my choice.
My mates got an E46 330d saloon with the earlier 180+bhp engine,it feels quickish but its not really. My mk3 16v Golf was not far off it to 120+ on a private road and the golf certainly wasnt quick.

how about a 5 series? leaves pelnty of money for a remap and what not....

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW+5+SERIES/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-51-113-240-4294966943-4294967078/advert.action?R=200928337727648&distance=45&postcode=LE12+8JB&channel=CARS&make=BMW&model=5+SERIES&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2000&vehicleRegLetter=X

or as mentioned a 3 series...

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/BMW/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-51-113-240-4294967078/advert.action?R=200925336331729&distance=41&postcode=LE12+8JB&channel=CARS&make=BMW&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2001&vehicleRegLetter=X

both are about 200bhp as standard and rwd so much more fun.
the golfs are over rated the engines arn't as good as the common rail diesels so i really wouldn't bother with one.
