11 years is the max iirc but after 4 you can protect them as this is kind of safe guarding yourself

Depends on the insurer and what they'll allow. Most say "5 or more".

I currently have 8 and my policy shows 8 years no claims - it also says full NCB entitlement and has said that since I had 5 years

Right here is one for you....

A year ago when my insurance was up for renewal I decided to change companies. I took a policy out with another company thinking I had 4 years NCD and stayed claim free for the whole year - therefore meaning I now have 5 years NCD.

I was sorting out some paperwork over the weekend and found my NCD entitlement from the company I left last year and it states I had 5 years NCD.

So basically when I renewed I thought I had 4 when in actual fact I had 5. Oops.

Now because I remained claim free again for the year does that now mean I have 6 years NCD or 5?

A-Plan gave me some good qoutes for my new P1, but there was only one other firm who could beat it and that was Keith Michaels Plc, A-Plan quotes me £475 FC with 7years NCB protected, Keith Michaels did it me for £410 and threw in a shiney keyring.

Thanks 22b, it's taken me a while to find a mint one and find one where the owner has looked after it, 9,000 after rebuild, lovely to drive, upto now it's the best car I've ever owned.

Majority of companies is 5 or 5 or more.

But some companies (eg TheAA) will accept up to 9 years NCD.

MarkM: If you kept all your documentations and explained the situation to your next renewal it "might" be ok to claim 6 (if company accept 6) as NCD have a 2 year shelf life so you might be ok.

I don't think the the 2 year shelf life stuff applies as I still used the same series of NCDs - I just told them I had 1 less years NCD than I actually do.

Should be ok I think.
