Going to look at a Ford Ka tomorrow, just wondered what I should be looking for, common faults? Prone to rusting in places etc? Its a 1999 on V plate, 85k miles

Rust on the sills, around the petrol filler cap and edges of panels.
The engine will probably tap, this could be the tappets (likely) but if its got a more rattle to the tap then its probably be the cam carrier wearing out, common problem.
Heater valves go on them, cheap fix but awkward to change.

Plus side is the engines are so easy to work on.

They're horrible cars in general, too many faults and bad things go wrong with them so I was saying it more in an advice sort of way. We had a 51plate KA in work and the rust was that bad around the petrol cap you could poke most of your fingers through, they are also horrible to drive. Poor engines and tiny inside.

I find them much nicer to drive than corsas, 106 and saxos etc.
Steering is light gearboxs are nice on them and they arent really unreliable except when your missus doesnt notice its missfiring and still does 90 in it and takes a chunk out of the piston.

They use the 1.3 Endura engine don't they? I had a fiesta with this lump. Expect it to sound tappy and be underpowered.

Harrisp summed this up to be honest.

i learned to drive in one, easy to drive, good handling, still does 110 on the clocks

they are good cars as proven by how popular they have been, just need to watch out for that old ford trait of rust.

not much to go wrong really, they are pretty basic.

Sills, bottom of doors, around petrol cap for rust.

My mothers one goes through springs for a laugh.

Personally, I think they're a great drive.

I have driven my GFs quite a bit and it will sit at a 100 (clock speed) on a private motorway

As everyone else has said they aren't bad cars except for rust and being quite slow but they are faster than a 12v corsa and dont feel anymore slower than a 106 shitsilver.

Thanks for all the comments, not really arsed about it being fast at the moment, just want something small, cheap, cheap to run and reliable'ish while I do my LGV Licence, will only be keeping it a few months, plus my bird will drive it which is a plus.

Very nippy car, as already stated rust around the fuel cap and sills, engine tappet noise, ask when the last time the belt was changed, in the ealry cars the gearbox's could sometime be abit fragile but overall a nice car

Only belt on the engine is the aircon/powersteering/alternator belt
