I have two best friends, we've known each other since we were kids and grew up together, went to school etc etc

Now, as "fun cars" for the weekend they've both bought classics and now I need one. Budget is £1500 - £3000; it must be from the 60s/70s and be a bit of a head turned.

Matt has this:
1976(iirc) Mustang

Paul has one of these:
1973 VW Beetle Jean (with Denim interior)

In the cool stakes Matt with the Mustang is winning quite considerably over Paul

He bought it as a bit of a laugh; his other car is a 280hp MV Rocket Kit Car.

However, I was amazed by the reaction the beetle gets when we were out in it last weekend

I was thinking Alfa Spider but most of them for sale are from the 80s. Might be the odd one from the 1970s about

I could maybe stretch the budget a little bit to £5000 if needed.

I'd prefer a rag top of some description and a degree of reliability

I would go with the Opel GT as they still have a few in the U.S. for parts.

77 trans am. pick up a decent one (well decent in relative terms cos they were built to ridiculously poor standard) for £5000.

far better buy than an opel gt. and parts are dog shit cheap.

Brother in law has a gold 77, picked it up for 4K, had it fo 3 years and never had one problem with it.

I too agree with trans am, you might also get a 70's camaro for that money too.
