Maths was never my strong point
say a petrol car does 40mpg @ 1.02 a litre
and a diesel one does 50mpg @1.05 a litre
over a periode of 10k miles, what would the diffrence be in costs ?

1.02 x 4.5 = 4.59
1.05 x 4.5 = 4.73
10000 % 40 (mpg) = 250
10000 % 50 (mpg) = 200
petrol = £1147.50
desiel = £946

indeed £200 over a year asn't much really, you wouldn't notice the difference in savings.

ofcourse it will as to get 40mpg out of a petrol its going to be some utter bag of crap. you'd struggle to get 25-30 out of a decent petrol car really. my gsi vectra did 34mpg to liverpool and back. in a tdci mondingo problably would be 55-60mpg.

Right, 40mpg over 10k = 250 gallons
50mpg over 10k = 200 gallons.
Petrol at 1.02 * 4.54 = £4.63 per gallon
Diesel at 1.05 * 4.54 = £4.77 per gallon
£4.63 * 250 = £1157.50
£4.77 * 200 = £954
Total saving being £203.50

you would if you were a diesel owner as they buy home brand beans etc and have a big pot of 1ps and 2ps and count them up once a year , where it ads upto £5.50 so then they can go out and buy a crate of 'biere' from the supermarket and talk about broad beans and the price of bread.

what petrol does 40mpg...........
lets say 35mpg £1311
against £946, saving £365 - nearly a 1/3
plus fuel prices are now the same...

diesel is set to go up at higher rate than petrol is over the enxt few years though. so the actual savings will be reduced a lot.
