Right,
I have been thinking recently about getting a bike in the near future (at least a year or so) and want to know more about what is needed (tests, license etc) I obviously need to get some practise of some sort I've never driven a proper bike before (only riden a moped a couple of times) so would need to learn somewhere too!
I'm sure there are plenty of bikers who come onto the forum so if anyone could point me into the right direction

Altho i have a bike ( i did Direct Access) i'm not sure whats required now. Sorry i can't help more

you nee dto do a cbt then you are best doing your theory, then you need to do some lessons or an intense course. if you are 21 you can direct access and ride any bike, or you can do the 33bhp for two years thing.
i dont have a licence but im seriously wanting a bike atm, a vfr 400, i think sepnding cash on that is better than wasting it on my car, tbh if i do get 1 i will sell the golf get a 1.2 or so and a nice bike

CBT - about £100
Theory - £31 when I did mine (March)
Direct Access - £360 (this was a 4 lesson course, duration and costs will vary on your skill and place you do it)
Module 1 Test - £10 (goes up in september)
Module 2 Test - £80 (again, this goes up in September)
And thats it...
CBT is easy enough, just a days course, pretty much guaranteed a pass.
Theory is just common sense questions, should be easy enough (there are bike questions in it though so read up on them) Again, get a test CD
DAS is just riding about on a 500cc (usually a Kwaki ER-5). Usual lesson-style structure, 3 to 4 hours riding for each lesson.
Module 1 Test - I have written up about this, but the forum I posted on seems to be dead, I'll dig it out later if it comes up. Basically its all the manouvers, hazard avoidance, emergency stop, u-turn. All off-road in a specially designated area.
Module 2 Test - Just an onroad ride. Lasts for 40 minutes, if your confident enough with your instructor and on the road with the bike you should be fine, its just silly mistakes which can let you down here (observation, balance, hesitation) There are no longer any manouveres on the Module 2 (no U-turns, emergency stop, etc)

If you have a bike and you are not as sensible as can be (who is now days) then you can die very easily. a guy i know got hit by a lorry on a ped ffs, went in a coma and isnt the same!
do your direct access and get some leathers and get a bike on the track, thats where you will learn to ride

Sorry but I have to completely disagree with that... Riding on track is a completely different discipline to riding on a road.

I agree with you, but its alot safer and high speeds etc? dont you agree to that?
Lets say a chav in a c20xe he has just fitted rams you up the arse due to 1.2 8v brakes? id rather be in my corsa than on a bike!
