hotrods with the front and rear wheels not under an arch. are these legal in the UK ?

Its a road-saftey issue.. You wont have a problem at MOT time but PC Plod can prohibit your car.

I was always under the impression that the wheel can not extend past the bodywork. The way kit cars get round this is to have a cycle wing over the tyre

The wheel must be under the bodywork. Hence why all the Lotus 7 based kit cars need to have fenders over the wheels in order the pass the SVA.

Doesn't mean to say you can't drive around with the wheels poking out like that. You might just get into trouble

or you just have a removable cycle wing whilst on the road, in black/carbon so it blends with the tyre

Depends on the year of manufacture. IE if the car was built like that in the 30's 40's its allowed to be on the roads like it. New cars however are not allowed to have the wheels extend past the bodywork as it doesnt meet type approval.

Its like rear seatbelts, a legal requirement now but 25 years ago they were an optional extra.

i heard something similar, cant remember the exact figure, but i definitely heard you were allowed a slight over hang. bear in mind that the overall width of the car is including wing mirrors, and they overhang your cars body work

the guy is right. Its a grey area with regards to law.

Can get done none the less, all depends on the police officers interpretation at time and if they themselves deem it unsafe etc.

Only thing stated in the law is that wheels can protude from the arch up to 30mm.

I thought it was that the tread of the tyre had to be within the arch, otherwise you need mudflaps etc. Something along those lines anyway

Not sure about the rear but the front is, same style as on the hood kit car ste W has built.
I would ask him as he will no more about it becuase his kit car has just gone through the SVA test.
