A guy at my uni is doing his PhD on this kind of thing. He's got some samples, and it is very cool! Not all that expensive for the actual materials, but the power supply for it is pretty pricey....

reminds me of the numbers on the le mans cars, although i think they have sme sort of ligh on them to make them glow

Would disagree to be honest. That wouldnt get you seen anywhere near as easily as proper reflective stuff.

Combination of both would be best.
The reflective stuff doesn't work til your headlights hit it, the EL would work til then.
Would also work on the silver unmarked cars as it's a pale silvery colour when off, could put it on the boots for added visibility without giving the cars away.

True.. My works van has what is basically a full wrap of the reflective stuff used on ambulance/police cars etc.. You would have to be seriously blind to miss it..
