So which Corsa B owners will be looking into this
Given how much you can haggle the cost of a brand new car down at the moment, any of you B owners thinking about changing to a nice new car??
Haggle the price down massivly, get your £2k, have the car for a year, and u could sell it and break even probably....

I don't think there will be much room for haggling, especially when they know they are giving £2k for a car that is no where near worth that.
Would still probably work out cheaper to buy a nearly new car that has had its initial depreciation and take a few hundred quid for your car.
Personally, its a shit idea.

And if you want to make some profit the scheme isnt just for BRAND new cars you can buy pre-reg and I believe up to 12month old cars which means you could in theory make a profit or break even like you say... You'd never break even on a brand new car.

If you can get that on 12 month olds and pre regs there could be bargains to be had.
Sell your car whatever you have, buy the cheapest car you can find with tax and test, go and get 2k of an already nicely depreciated 6-12 month old car.
Don't think it'll work to get that many old bangers off the road though, especially if you get charged rrp for the cars instead of the rock bottom prices we get atm.

Any more details on this?
Can someone else trade a car in and give the voucher to you?

The more I think about it the worse an idea it seems.
How many people driving normally pretty much worthless cars are now going to go and buy a brand new one?
Say they buy a 10k car and get the 2k off. They've still got 8k to find which they are unlikely to want to do or chances they wouldn't be driving round in a banger in the 1st place! It'll benefit a small minority and wouldn't of thought it will be enough to kick start the motor industry.

The government simply want to get older cars off the road that fall into the pre 2001 tax bandings.

Its quite an interesting prospect for me, as I'm graduating uni this summer, so will (hopefully) be in a position to buy a newer car within the next year and my astra is nearly 10 years old so will fit in with the requirements. Having said that, unless the deal was considerably better than buying nearly new and selling my astra privately, i wouldn't consider it....

Once the majority are off the road you wait and see what happens to the higher tax bands on 2001+ cars. I should think it will be a shock!

They'll put some spin on it about them being so damaging to the environment. but I'm sure its being widely banded about that its actually more evnironmentally friendly to stick with the older car by the time you take into account all the emissions etc. produced manufacturing the new cars.
Its all bull shit

Oh and lets not forget it will decimate the second hand car market.. Its already weak from the whole post 2001 tax banding scare and the silly high price of scrap last summer.

There aren't as many old cars on the road as there used to be anyway, cars that are a few years old are already fairly cheap.
Although the govt will tax anything and everything, I don't think that's why they're doing it.
It'll more likely be because it sounds good and Joe Bloggs thinks they're doing him a favour.

What i find funny is, we're in a recession, people have limited money.
Interest rates are high
You have an old car, chances are your not earning loads, hence why you can't afford a new one.
You spot a car, its £12k, you haggle down to £10k (so we're talking Corsa 1.4 16v size here :lol .
You get £1000 for your car..
You get £2000 voucher.
Great, i've gone from £0 debt, to £7000 debt, in a recession, where rates are high and I may loose my job.
Another great idea by Labour....

100% agree!
I can afford to buy a new car but I choose to run an old car, it costs me significantly less money. Disposable motoring FTW!

But that is what they want! They want you to borrow more money and make big vatable purchases.
