Need a car to drive around in for abit and my borther has offered me his car for a little bit, while i wait for a car to come up for sale which i like.
Now i still have my insurance policy on the old car, which i would like to transfer onto his car so i can drive it, but still keep his own insurance policy running on the car.
I would go onto his insurance as a second driver but i don't want to cancel my policy as have already run 6 months of it which i don't want to lose.
Question is can you run a car with two seperate policies on?

You could technically probably get away with it but no you can't.

Are you fully comp on your policy, with the ability to drive any car with the drivers permission? If so, sorted

just add your self to his existing policy for the duration and keep yours running. Or if you are only going to use his car for a few days, try dayinsure. depending on your age ofcourse.

Insuring Dad's Capri. He's with a company for over 21's and the broker he uses said to take out a separte policy on the same car if I wanted to drive it.
But, Googling it, it does seem to be a dark area.
best off ringing local plod.

I was under the same impression as John to be honest, maybe worth giving your local constabulary a polite phonecall as has been said

girl friend tried insuring her self on her mothers car, when she stated her mum was still insured on it, they'd be commiting fraud by taking another po;icy out on it that was direct line.

Always though the same as John.
I guess you'd get away with it but what if it gets written off and the 1st person gets paid out.
Does the other person have to just lump it?

its more because if there are two different insurance policies on the same car you could commit fraud by claiming from both of them, getting double money for the car

you can't insure a car twice according to my broker, when they go to finalise the insurance it should fail on their systems.

It can technically happen because i've left insurance running on cars i've sold before until the end of the policy.
As far as I am aware it's illegal or at least not allowed though.

A guy at work has 2 insurance policies. One for him and his wife and one for his daughter. He gets asked about it if he gets pulled over but never gets anything for it.

Like I say Im pretty sure its illegal, if your going to break the law then you may as well not bother with any insurance at all!

If both policy holders claim for an accident, it would be paid out for twice.
That's fraud.

I left my bike insured once when I was younger for the last 4 months of the policy to get the vital no claims
Wouldn't do it again as said it is illegal and causes all kinds of grief if someone does claim. Infact my m8 got pulled on Saturday in his Bora and the pold told him it was insured under two policies and with a previous owner. He told him to ring his insurance and see if they can sort it out with the other company as he is now the registered owner and only policy holder.

How often does the law make sense?
All I'm doing is speaking from experience and when Ive tried to insure one car with two policies Ive been told its illegal! Yeah, there are probably loop holes and you could get away with doing it but its when you have a bad smash or run someone over that it bites you! Something to do with a "conflict of interests"

Fair point, it is a fucking silly rule IMO, you get done for not having insurance and you can get done for having insurance

Yeah but if its someone else claiming off you then YOU don't have a choice in the matter!
It is a bit of a daft rule I know but I was wondering how those 24 hour policy things work then? Unless they only cover that person for that day and dont include for theft or fire etc?
