Firstly I was wondering the best places to check. Ive been using Pistonheads, here, few other forums.

Secondly, something I seem to see quite often is that the engine ticks a it from cold, but is fine when warm. Is this somethong to worry about?

What sort of things should I be looking for?

Ive got about 2.5k - 3k to spend so want it to be pretty clean.

Cheers

You could try e-bay as well, but tbh I ended up doing that and I've had quite a bit of trouble from mine. That's kind of my own fault though.

Basically, you're just looking for the same things you would with any car. If you arrange to view a car make sure it's cold for you getting there - if there's something wrong with it it'll start easier when warm. Also, pop the bonnet and make sure that the engine's sitting nicely in the bay - as in not at an angle, or too far to one side.

And ticking from cold is usually a sign of low oil or general wear and tear of the tappets. If you see one that's ticking like an F reg fiesta even if it's full of oil, you're as well walking away.

Cheers. Its going to be annoying if I do discover one that I have to walk away from though as I live in NI and will most likely have to travel to England for a good one lol.

Are they a reliable engine? I am looking for onw which has ben rebuilt, but hard to find.

dont walk away from an xe if it taps on start up. most will for the first few seconds anyway.

if the tapping goes on for a long time 1 min plus, you may be looking at getting the tappets done but its not a particulary hard job, and isnt something id lose sleep over

they are very very reliable if the engine is looked after and the conversion has been done properly. in fact my xe nova was one of my most reliable cars.

and there great fun, well worth the money

Yeah my XE taps on start up, but it's a mint engine

You shouldn't walk away from one if thats the only thing wrong with it.

Almost all XE's leak oil from somewhere too

Ive seen one (probably sold by now) with 160k on it, but was rebuilt 15k ago. Would you folks rather have something like this thats been rebuilt or something with <100k on it?

if he has receipts to back everything up then fair enough they can say anything they want to me but if they havent got receipts to back it up then take it as gospel as said ticking from cold doesnt mean its a bad engine leaky sumps but theres a lot like that and wouldnt put me off

if hes got full rebuild receipts for the engine you may be onto a winner. main things to check are wiring etc, budget an extra couple of hundred for sorting out some sensors etc.

some people really bodge the electronics and wonder why they dont run right. but its quite a basic engine and the conversion been done enough that theres no real problems etc and an xe isnt the most expensive thing youll every buy

Lol, so true fir3vip3r.

And I wasn't saying walk away from every single one that taps at all, just the ones that are ticking like an F reg fiesta (as in the same sound as dropping metal BB's on a tin tray)

And the guy I got mine off didn't know anything about them and was telling me I'd 'beat scoobys and top out at 150'. I just agreed with him to shut him up.
