They are to protect the rest of the bonnet, screen, pillars and wings that stone chips have no way of getting to

So bonnet bras are actually to stop your mrs scratching the bonnet when doing the dirty

sometimes if they are a loop they are for sticking a strap through to loop around and under the bonnet to stop the top edge falpping about at speed, but either way they just look stupid.
