For those who don't know, I have built that car in my avatar <<<<<

To get it on the road and get a number plate I need to put it through an SVA (single vehicle approval) test done by VOSA

quote:

The Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) scheme is a pre-registration inspection for cars and light goods vehicles that have not been type-approved to British or European standards. The main purpose of the scheme is to ensure that these vehicles have been designed and constructed to modern safety and environmental standards before they can be used on public roads.

After paying my £190 fee and having sent off proof of amateur build I got a test date for 2nd April at 8am

Here it is ready to go into the test

I couldn't take any more pictures incase I was a terrorist

Well the test took 4 hours and was very thorough. Needless to say, I failed first time, but the tester assured me that it is very rare a kit car passes first time. He did comment on the very high standards of build I had done and that the fail points were mostly cosmetic.

Here is a full list of it's failures, lots of these due to the wrong size edge beading on lots of the surfaces.

6. Interior - Contactable edges not radiused to at least 2.5mm

- N/S under dash (electric box) [this is my megajolt and it is 15mm too low on the scuttle]
- Rear facing bonnet edge [my dodgy edge trim]

9.1. Lights

- Front direction indicators mounted below 350mm from ground height [ missed it by 15mm due to altering the ride height last week. doh]
- unable to access front position lights [my dipped beam comes on with side lights, this is ok but means he can't see the side lights as he gets dazzled]
- Brake lights stay on when not applied [looks like the brake light switch moved during the brake test]

10. Mirrors

- interior rear view mirror - missing [oops, didn't realise that I needed one, thought the wing mirrors would do]

13. Exterior Projections, contactable edges not radiused to 2.5mm

- Upper seatbelt anchorage metal bar [ this is 12mm flate plate to space the belts right, need to get it boxed in I think]
- Upper rear body top cover edging [just needs tadpole beading]
- Front cycle wing brackets. [lost a piece of edge trim, he told me not to bother getting more on there and then, just do it for the retest]
- Exhaust silencer stud cover. [this projects 7mm, needs to be below 5 like the others to pass]
- Holes in bonnet ore than 12mm [the wiper mount holes, I covered them with black vinyl, classed as temporary, need to bond some plastic under the bonnet]

14. Protective steering

- Steering wheel - contactable edges not radiused to 2.5mm [ need a steering wheel pad]

15.1 Design and construction

- Steering shaft universal joint - Bolt lock tabs not engaged [how did I miss that!]
- Steering column upper supprt 'U' bolts - no locking mechanism on nuts [needs nylocs]

15.2 electrics

- Wiring to brake light switch not secured at 300mm intervals. [needs a p clip]

16.2 Brakes

- Servo/master cylinder nuts no locking device [I used thread lock but he wants to see nyloc]

16.4 Brakes Hydraulic

- Brake pedal operation spongy [must be air in o/s rear as it wasn't as good as the others on the brake test but was perfect on handbrake test, needs re-bleed]
- Brake failure warning light - symbol (!) is not on illuminated surface [ must contact digidash about their SVA compliant dash!!]

I have a re test in 4 weeks and they only test what it failed on last time, so he told me I'd be in and out in an hour.

If anyone has every read an SVA manual, they will understand how much bollocks there is to get a car approved and due to the shear number of variations it is difficult to interpret.

So next time, hopefully I'll pass. Lets just hope I don't break anything at Combe.

Cant believe how strict they are. Surely some new manufactured cars would fail that test!

I know, but the rules state that locking devices must be used on safety critical items like steering, suspension, brakes etc. I had used thread lock and the standard nuts but he would like to see nylocs or the standards with spring washers.

I remember watchin "A car is born" when he had to put his car through the test, and i was shocked at how thorough they were.

It does make sense though. Its about the safety of the driver and pedestrians.

You should see the full list of everything they check, It is like a phone book. I particularly like the speedo test. he checks it at 30, 40, 60 and 70 It over read by 1mph throughout the range, which is good, they don't like to see it exact and it cannot under read. I was stood 2 feet away as it ripped up to 70 in about 2 seconds lol.

Why does it need to have a rear view mirror?

Vans manage without..

How you gonna fix that?

Law states 2 mirrors and must be able to manually adjust them from the driver seat with seat belt on. Passenger mirror is optional. It passed the mirror test with the 2 it had but failed as i never had the interior one. Vans are exempt if they have a permanent partition.

I haver to have one on the bonnet in the centre, it doesn't even need to see the markers on the test area as the others can see it. it just has the be there, and cannot be glued on.

Shaun, loads of people put the application in on the last week and they had to triple the staff at swansea to cope! They are fully booked now untill May, when the SVA is scrapped and IVA comes in!

the sva is very good but in otherways falls down. you could pass an mot with some things but they would fail an sva test, go figure.
as for the new test i dont fancy trying to get through that, ill stik to modifying whats already available for now.
whats the spec on your new car anyhow?

It is a Robin Hood 2b plus

Coilovers all round with bump and rebound control. 330lb front springs 220lb rears. 7x15 boos alloys with yoko a519 195 50 15 tyres

Vauxhall C20XE with polished and ported head to match SBD inlet manifold and weber 45 carbs, Ford escort ignition pack with fiesta throttle position sensor and megajolt ignition controller. Custom 4-2-1 exhaust manifold into custom silencer.

Engine is mated to a ford type9 gearbox using SBD bellhousing and has shortened SBD alloy sump.

3.62 sierra diff (upgrading to LSD after SVA)

Car weighed in on the SVA scales at 350kg front, 250kg rear fully wet with driver.

It has an ETB digidash with gps lap timer and full data logging.

Although I don't have anything official for my car yet, a very similar one has a 1/4 time off 11.2, 0-60 in 4.1 and I am expecting 185bhp after the rolling road setup in a week.

It feels so fast being oped top and so low to the ground. It is that low i can touch the tarmac as i'm driving

bloody hell, some of those things are so silly! now some people can see that manufacturing a car isn't as easy as they think.

but congrats to you on building your own, must fel so good to drive something you built with your own two hands

Yeah its a nice looking car. great project thread. scratch built isn't for the faint hearted and very rarely do you get a car that looks as good as his. My next project is a scratch built but using someone elses chassis design.

I plan building a kit car at some point but a kid and house have put it on the back burner for a while until i have some spare cash to burn

I looked at MNR seems to be one of the best kits you can buy

What engine you got in yours?

MNR kits do seem really good. a bloke from rhocar built the very first kit they sold a few years back, the vortx i think it was called. looked a great car.

My engine details are a few posts up ^^

i'll be using it for track days and sunday runs, but plan on building a dedicated track car next with a bike engine.

Because the car is based on a lotus 7 and that caterham grille is far nicer than the one that came with my kit that looked like a bbq rack
