.... a fast, reliable, cheap and very easy to maintain (along the lines of a Corsa B for example lol), slightly classy yet grown up, small family sized 3 door hatch which is such a good alrounder it fits the bill in every cost effective way but has performance to boot (and is not a Corsa B? lol).
Because, I'm really struggling picking a new car. I want rid of the stigma of the Corsa (got a 1.6 Sport) but don't wanna be paying out loads for repairs on an unreliable car because I'm making cast offs for performance on a budget.
Help! lol

Aye, Can pick up a tidy Astra SRi for 3K. if your not bothered about image, thought about a Volvo? Can get S40 T4 for that sort of money and they are rarely ever been thrashed
Otherwise I'd go for a Golf/A3 Turbo

I have been looking at stuff like:
Golf 1.8 turbo's (mark 4's)
Clio 172's
MG ZR 160's
Astra SRi's prob the 1800 as the 2.2's and timing chain issues worry me
Focus 1.8 Zetecs
Ibiza Cupras
Corsa C SRi 1.8's
But as I say I really have been spoilt with my Corsa, it's been SO reliable and cost pennies to run that I'd be pissed off if I'm paying out on repairs all the time, so having something which is "easy and conventional" to fix would be a bonus.
I only really know about Corsa's and general Vauxhall stuff so I'm going into the unknown with other brands and hear a lot of trouble with electrics and niggles on the VW's but they're one of my faves from my "shortlist".
Just dunno what to do. I want the best of all worlds without paying for it! lol
Don't want a "boy racery" car as I'm 27. But how come it's so hard picking something worth aiming for lol, ballache.
Ta for the replies so far

If it was me, I'd get the Astra. Solid, reliable, quick-ish, look decent enough.

go test drive them all, they all have thier pro's and cons tbh
the interior etc makes a difference to comfort just not how it looks on the outside
some might have shit driving positions that dont suit you
thats my opinion anyway

Cheers all, I really do need to go and experience some like you say Daz as it's quite likely I won't like how some drive etc.
I think the worst quality interior in my list would be in the MG but you can get a "lot of car for the money" in terms of age for what you pay which is nice.
Need find some local cars to test and garages to blag then

they are under estimated cars, about 170bhp out the IIRC
fairly solid built, and reliable as fook.
