i am having a bit of trouble with my bumper. i have replaced the top of my gsi bumper with a post 97 one as all the mounting points were snaped. so i bought a glass fibre kit and put some metal strips to hold it together then used the kit to smooththe gap but it wont stick to the top part of the bumper. can anyone give me any advice on how to make it grip.

did you key the surface before applying the fibreglass, by this i mean did you rough it up so the fibreglass has something to grip too?

would of been better to maybe plastic weld it aswell

did you key it up with 40 grade paper?
needs to be very rough
also plastic welding is pretty easy
just like soldering, just use a plastic welder to heat the plastic up and weld together

160 isnt course enough for the fibreglass to grip onto
needs to be 40 gritted
plastic welding is just melting two bumpers together by heating them up and smoothing making one bumper, easy with a bit of practice

Im a mechanic so i know too well about people doing things for themselves. If you have some mechanical knowledge then home specials usually turn out fine. if you struggled with lego as a child chances are your going to fuck it up and someone like me will take your money off you to put it right which to be honest doesnt bother me one bit.

Same with bodywork. Fibreglass wont be strong enough to hold that, it needs plastic welding by a professional to look right. Some things can be done at home but others should be left to professionals!

i work in a bodyshop so thankfully i know what im talking about
plastic welding two bits of bumper isnt something we do
smc is 100 times better then fibreglass anyways
no matter what you do matting two bits of bumper wont ever be as strong as a factory bumper
people want to do things at home let them do it, just give some advice along the way, dont blame them for money saving

Epoxy resin doesn't stick to polypropylene. What you're doing just simply wont work...

There's a few pics of how I did mine, which still is so weak I'm going to take a mould off of it and do it in GRP...

thats just were the hardener has'nt set right. i was thinking about getting a bodyshop to do it but thought al give it a go myself save on costs.

and for dizzyrebel i do have mechanical knowledge other wise i wounld'nt of done this all on my lonesome

and for the bumper its not the fibre glass thats holding it together there is stirps of metal reverted behind holding it in place. the fibre glass is just to cover the gap.

You've got a lot of air in the matting, you need to go over the voids with some rough wet and dry, then put some more matting on top. Another problem you've got is you've broken one massive rule - filler/resin on paint. It just wont stick!

You might be better off taking off what you've done and taking notice of the advice given to you...

to be honest it looks like youve used fibreglass matting, i would take it off if it hasnt set properly, secure the two parts of the bumper properly, and then use fiberglass filler (p40) to fill over any gaps, then use Body filler (p38) to get the correct shape,

you could also use tigerseal to bond the plastics together if you cant plastic weld

It would have been easier to cut away the old mounting lugs and fabricate some new ones out of thin metal then sinply drill and rivet them t the bumper. You have just made one hell of a job for yourself!
