Want some experience first, I prefer to walk before I try running
I also dont need that bigger bike for nipping round town, and funds while at uni dont really allow for that sort of expense, would rather just get riding

I did my bike test right after my car test.. There is a buzz you get on a bike you cant get from a car..
Probably heard this a million times but take things easy for the first year, its so easy to get carried away.
And I really wouldn't advise getting an R6 for your first bike!! Get a similar aged CBR600, it will be cheaper to insure and its a MUCH more forgiving bike.

Yeah the R6 looks nice because its more track oriented which means its not very forgiving on our lovely "well maintained" UK roads..
You should be sensible about your first bike and not just think about looks because it could be a choice that makes the difference between a safe riding career and your potential death.

M first bike was a CBR.. really good first bike. Was quick enough but not enough to scare me. Bought an 04 ninja next and it was a completely different kind of power.
Do plenty insurance quotes, I insured my Ninja for a tenner more than the CBR.. I think its cheap because if you come off your not going to have much chance of claiming..

Tip for anyone thinking of doing it who are over 21 now. Get it done before the end of april, As after april, the new test comes in, and its a bit more difficult.

Just get the R6. All the people who say get something else just don't have the balls to get an R6. Just because it'll do 160mph doesn't mean you have to do that everywhere. My first big nike was an R6 and it was fine. Remember it'll only go as fast as you make it

Get it done
Best thing I ever done and have had my full license just over 12 years now. The throttle works both ways and the older generation R6 is a lost less focussed than the 08-09 models. I'd not personally have a full on sports bike as my first. Chances are it will be dropped at least once. Although I've known plenty of people not to have an issue. I'd get a bandit, hornet or other naked bike as a starter. Still have plenty of umph, but more forgiving, easier to manoeuvre and let's you get used to the weight. Depends on how nervous a person you are

Yes of course, I've not got the balls

You really are talking out of your arse.. You dont have to go 200mph in a Maclaren F1 but I bet most people could manage to stack one just pooting around town at 30mph because of the power delivery etc.
A smooth and confident riding style comes with experience so jumping straight on a track based bike that requires skill to ride is just plain stupid and you will only end up looking like a n00b who hasnt got a clue.. Jump on a more refined 600 like the CBR and it will help you become smother and more confident and when you do make a mistake it wont bite your legs off.

The man speaks sense!!
ZZR600, CBR600, SV650 etc. all great first bikes, yes you wont feel 'so cool' but chances are you'll be a better rider for it, you can learn the basics then move onto something a bit sharper
