What like are these cars to live with in general. I've test driven a ph1 172 and liked the way it drove and handled and I know about the belts being a major cost so to make sure if I buy one theyre done but what else is there to know?Just wanting an idea really hopefully without biased responses and without getting nothing but "french shite"Cheers

Don't get a caught by the cambelt mith mate. They only need doing every 60k and any normal garage will be able to do it no probs. My local garage (a Porsche specialist so rates arnt that cheap) charged me about 360 which included all belts and bits direct from Renault

My sisters owned a 172 Cup for almost 2 years now and had quite a few problems at first but been fine ever since. They're pretty nippy imo, hers sits at 110mph just as comfy as 40mph. As long as its already got the belt done, I say go for it

belts are 72k or every 5 years and if you go to a specialist you can get the cambelt and tensioner and aux belt and tensioner done at a more affordable price.
Quite a bit of scaremongering about them going wrong but its just like any car you get good ones and you get bad ones.
I would go to www.cliosport.net and do some research and be wary of catd/c cars there are loads out there always pay the price for a proper HPI.

Yeh I registered on cliosport.net and it has proved quite useful.
What are they like on fuel for an every day car?
Right now I'm using maybe £20-£25 a week on petrol in my 1.4 16v corsa but when i test drove the clio i got the trip computer to read 27mpg but was a bit of heavy right footing in the test drive

I get 40 mpg every day on my 50 mile commute as I can't really go fast do to traffic. Never got near that in my gsi or sport. Got 19 mpg last nite thou as I was enjoying having new tyres

Terrible cars.
Bad driving position, terrible clutch, terrible build quality, crashy, need to be worked hard to get anywhere.
MPG isn't too bad and as said don't listen to the cambelt rubbish although obviously it's better if it's been changed.
32 mpg on mainly journeys of a few miles on mine, quite good imo.

My sister uses hers in the week to go to work which is about 12 miles away but she barely moves at certain points so her MPG is always in the 40's, goes down to around 30/32 when I drive it but I'm heavy footed.

I can understand the driving position point over the corsa,you seem to sit very high up and very 'level' based compared to the corsa gives a more 'sunken' feel
I'm to too bothered about what the dash looks like and when I test drove one it had less rattles than my corsa,in fact it had maybe one or two at most!
What sort of money do should i be lookin to spend to get a good 172? Would love a 182 in that light blue colour but can't justify spendin that much!

The clutch is in an awful position too, takes a while to get used to.

Yeh,even after 15-20 mins when I drove the ph1 I found I noticed the difference in the clutch less than when I started out

i use mine every day, its a 172 cup so not a nice inside as a full fat, its no long distance cruiser, but its fun to drive, and comfortable enough to go on distance with.
plenty about to tune them, people who don't own them say they are plagued with problems, mine gets abused all day everyday and its just needed general wear and tear items, exhaust, brakes, aux belt, had to repair the engine mount amd rewire the sea belt tensioner, not alot at all.
3.5k will get a decent car, cliosport.net seems to have lower prices than else where

So am i right in thinking going for a full fat one over a cup? I think I'd prefer the climate control and the leather/alcantara seat and xenon lights
Yeah it seems people who own them are saying more promising things compared to people who have just heard things 'from the grape vine' so to speak

I will say my mate who has a 2.0 16v ide engine'd megane coupe seems to have nothing but problems but I think he has been a little unfortunate and it has done around 80k miles

im not biased, i probably wont buy another clio after this one, just the same as i didnt buy another corsa, for the money the clio is a great car out the box, IMO good looks, great handling, nice spec inside, and pretty reliable

I've owned 3 corsas now and i won't be going back,i've just got sick of them and they havn't exactly been happy motoring some of the time or cheap motoring at that.
Just want a change now my insurance is down a bit and have always liked the clio 172's
