I can't get on any damn sites at work. Pre-requisites are:
Budget of £5k MAX!!!!!!!!! Cheaper is better.
Probably derv engine, not ruling petrol out.
1400cc+ engine, but below 2000cc
This is for a sub 20yo so 1.9 tdi's are out of the question. Im thinking 1.4-1.7 litres really as insurance will [be expensive]
Reliable, not earth shattering expensive to run and maintain.
Doesn't have to be the coolest car about, but can't be a lamo mummys car either. He is 20 so at the "cool" stage.
Options to ponder on?
Please don't give links saying "this ones really cool, buy this" as we're looking at car options, not what to buy right this minute. Not interested in modified cars that have blinged up mirrors and cherrybomb exhausts.
Corsas are not an option, nor are saxos, or any other really small cars. He's got a Golf Mk4 at the moment, so this kind of size.
What can you come up with?
Im thinking Astra Mk5 1.7dti? But thats a bit lame really, but as i've got no damn access at work, i can't even get the ball rolling.
Ta muchly.

Yeah only a 1.4.
Far too big and heavy a car for that engine. 1.6 isn't much better, but I think the 1.9 tdi, he'll have insurance problems on it. So that kinda rules out most VAGs. Im unsure how a pd110 would go on insurance (1.9 110bhp, 130bhp, and 150bhp).
Would open up a lot of doors if he could get the 1.9 unit insured.

Mileage getting high, getting old, getting tatty, problems starting to arise.
Better to get rid of now and get a newer car.
He's already kept it those few years. 1st car.

don't look at insurance groups, most of the time they are useless..
for example a saxo Vtr is group 7 and at 19 i cant get insured, how ever mazda 323 is group 9 and i can easily get insured on that...
so what i am saying is get a quote for a car before saying "No"
also what is your budget for insurance? as this is very important at "sub 20 yo"
anyway my suggestions:
Seat Ibiza
Mk 5 Astra
Ford Focus 1.6/1.8

Ibiza mk4's about 3.5k apparently for 1.9tdi 2003 and insurance is silly cheap on them imo.
edit: mines pd100 and insurance for me 19 + 2ncb + mum on ins = 700 a year fully comp
and pow has the pd130 and isnt paying much more i think.

You have such a nice turn of phrase.
I would ask him to spend the time getting quotes rather than just ruling out stuff.
And if the Golf is underpowered but you don't want more power, you'll need something smaller.

Such a nice turn of phrase???
The golf weighs as much as a house and has about as much power as a 1.2 Corsa. The engine is too small for the cars size, i've had a user on here tell me this also. It drinks oil and generally is time to move on.
Corsas are too small.
I've already asked him to fillout a few insurance quotes for pd110's to see what he's going to be paying.
Seeing as his mum cannot work, and his dad has passed on, the finances mean to pay out as little as possible.
Focus and Ibiza sounds a good start too. I know the Focus is quite a good little runaround motor, how reliable are the Ibizas? Uses the VAG engines don't they?
Matt, whats the build quality like? I'll have a nose online later, but what kinda years good to go for/stay away from?
Ian - Power Vs weight????
A 1.4 in a 1400+kg car is extremly slow. I mean we don't need Civic Typre R performance, but something with a bit more poke that said Golf. Performance is not the main requirement, but wanting more umph than the golf, but not huge amounts more. Lots of motorway miles, hence why im thinking of dervs and something similar size to what he has.

Trying to keep him away from modified stuff
Modified = £££££
Something he's not got lying around on trees
Lupos not a bad call, but I think he'll reckon its a bit small and girly though. I'll add it to the suggestions list though.
Cheers Matt

Heres what i would get, mainly cos they look great. Very good 50 MPG, £120 year tax.
MG ZS TD 115
Insurance group 10, i have the 1.8petrol group 11 version and my insurance is 1048 fully comp with 3 years nc and im sub 20 too. Very nice looking car for the money and i might be wrong but i think the diesel engine is BMW derived and its not sluggish to 60 at 9.5. Remap maybe ?

My insurance on the A3 1.9tdi (110) is £600 for the year and i have 1 NCB at 21yrs old.
Just to give you an idea about insuring the 1.9tdi engines.

But A3 is similar to the golf as in model class. Bora is more your family car.

Just let him ride your ego about, it's big enough!!
On a serious note, the corsa c sri diesel seems a good call, the lupo is a tad girly imo
focus tdci's are nice pieces of kit in standard form and they don't hang about too much either
