Obviously more fun in RWD but which is the best to drive?

Find it alot easier to turn with the RWD compared to my old FWD car, just fishtails alot more though.

Had a quick look on the net and there seems to be conlficting theories on which is best.

Thought i'd bring the debate here!

So which is the best?

fwd probably, cos you get more weight over the driving wheels.

In theory, a 911 would be good if it had skinnier tyres

obviously, but that wasn't an option.

I leant to drive in a rwd car. a lot of the time i was out in the snow, and i managed fine. If you drive smoothly and sensible, then you'll be fine.

agreed that fwd has weight over engine thus helping with traction.

Good answer

Tbh having never driven anything RWD in anything other than sunny conditions (admittedly it was a 911T) I wouldnt know, but it isnt too hard in my FWD astra

I had great fun in the snow in a FWD Jetta, I can't imagine how much fun RWD must be

FWD imo and with as little weight over the front wheels = least possible power needed to get moving which in turn = less skidding.

I was in a really icey car park today and a BMW 530i struggled to get moving once stopped and some Mazda thing with FWD also did.

I've driven on ice loads in my 12v and never lost traction once. It's awesome tbh, because it's so light that it takes no power to move and it's the power which causes your wheels to spin.

Saying that, I do think it's down to the driver more!

Especially in a Transit van. Big wheels but lots of weight and loads of torque isn't good.

Going with the FWD and no weight theory. My grandad used to drive Mini Vans for work and NEVER got stuck in the snow.

I would say FWD deffo has more traction but RWD is more predictable and deffo more fun.

my 1.4 polo is shit hot in the snow and ice, skinny tyres so can pretty much get up any hill within reason.

rwd would be shit getting up hills imo, same with fwd with wide tyres!

mates tractor was quite gud getting up hills and playing in though

Heavy RWD automatic cars with soft suspension, LWB & a wide track plus comparitively narrow tires and an a nice lazy engine that isn't too peaky is the next best thing to 4WD in my experience.

1.3L MK II Escorts and automatic Chevettes are good too.

Well imo in snowy conditions, RWD is easier to control, you have a better control of the car with regards to power. So cornering in slippy conditions you are best off in a RWD car as it will not understeer. Oversteer is better!
