Ive been reading round and apparently for the smoke test the engine is revved from idle to redline a maximum of 6 times
It says this test 'should not do any damage to a well maintained engine'.
Now as far as I know its been maintained as it should be, I dont much like the prospect of some numpty in a garage ragging the shit out of my motor, considering I never go above 3.5/4k...... I assume if you refuse to allow this to happen your car cannot pass the MOT?
What happens when you allow them to have fun with your loud pedal, that the engine DOES break? What sort of comeback do you have???

I did my work experience at a garage a few years ago and never saw this happen? Unless its changed
Emissions etc are usually done at a set rpm

id ask to do that bit yourself
i mot'd my car yesterday and the tester was great
i sat in the car and revved it as he asked while he did emissions test

i only had to rev to 2krpm for around 30 secs that was on a 1.6 petrol

im concerned too, only ever took mine to 4k dont want some monkey taking it the limiter, especially from cold

Its not within an inch of its life though. It says a maximum of 6 times, so they might only do it a couple of times. Why is your engine suddenly going to break when it gets revved a couple of times?
Looks like you'll just have to make do without an MOT then.

I just dont see why it need to be revved right up to the line, they dont do that on petrol cars?

Because its a smoke test, an engine doesn't really smoke on idle? and generally petrol engines don't smoke that much?
Make sure they don't check your lights too, just incase a bulb blows.

If your worried about your car going to the redline once, I would seriously think of getting rid of it and getting a new one. The rev limiter on the car is set so it will not do any damage to the car, nothing at all to worry about.

It won't do any damage to the engine even from cold, the engines are designed to be driven like that by people who don't have a clue anyway.

the test for petrol engine mesures the emissions at idle and about 3000rpm
the diesel test just involevs measuring the smoke opacity from idle to limiter.
Also diesel dont bounce off the limiter like a petrol. I controlled by a governor in the high pressure pump. so, if anything it should be safer for a diesel to be at the limiter.
theres also a fast pass route, so if first rev is very good, then they only do it the once.

This is only on diesels so stop worrying!

I give mine some lmiited death every now and again (sometimes on purpose, sometimes not!)
Theyre gunna do it, if the car is well looked after it'll be fine.
5k is the limiter to stop breaking, not the breaking point
