Been looking at the price of the standard 197's and they've droppped a fair whack recently. It's for the missus and she likes th elook of them but we've not had chance to have a good look round one yet.
Are their any main points to look for on them? common problems, recalls etc? What they like on the motorway? Better or worse for comfort than a CTR?
Cheers,
Rob

EVO mag hated there's on the MWAY journeys due to no 6th gear i think
IMO not a good enough step up from the 182 etc..it might have a better chassis but they have dulled the edge off too much so you won't notice it without being on a track.

Save the cash and buy a 182 or CTR

New CTR's are more expensive, and not big fans of the old 182's. They're ideal if you want the little-car raw feeling, but she wants something that's quick & fairly refined, but that can be fun too - hence the "numbing down" appeals from the newer car.
N.B the 197's have 6 gears and cruise control so they should be (on paper) ok on the regular cornwall-midlands runs.

My mates got a 197 cup. Hes spent the extra on the recarro bucket style front seats.
I love his car. It pulls well, and feels very planted around the bends.
The interior on the cup is a bit plain as they use the same dash as the 1.2 clio. So with a regular 197 i think you will have more mod cons.
I would have one in a flash if i had the cash.
Oh and to add my old man owns a CTR but i prefer the look and the feel of the 197.

I wouldn't even buy a Meriva VXR
Now for Vauxhall trivia (sorry)
Rumour is that the Meriva was only released in VXR form with the Z16 to iron out any issues with the engine before the engine found it's way into the Corsa which of course would sell 10x more than the Meriva.
End
Thanks for listening.

I liked it, don't be fooled by the cup model though. Go for the normal 197

I can believe that because its a ridiculously shit car. Never driven one, but a Meriva in any form is shit enough.

Colin - She preffers the Corsa, but they're £1000 more expensive for a similarly aged car, even though they're similarly priced new. The budget is already stretched to afford the 197 .
Few issues i've found out about are:
Kangarooing with some cars when cold
Dodgy 3rd gears on some early cars
Recaros seemingly trimmed in crepe-paper
October 07 onwards got a longer 6th gear
Cup model is only really a benifit if you want the chassis set-up and can't afford the £1400 extra for the FF with the cup pack option

I booked laurens car in to have the revised map (cold start) flashed onto the ECU. Alarmingly, she already has the latest software and it still kangaroos like a fucker sometimes.
Longer 6th gear is true - still sits at 3000rpm ish iirc at 80mph.
