I have just £1000 to spend on getting a car.
I really dont want nothing like an Corsa, Escort and so on.
Saxo spends its life in the Garage getting fixed and its group 14 insurance.
I like the Old minis alot, but I know they can have alot of problems with sub frames and rust 
Is 1k enough to get something decent ?
I dont mind if its 998cc  just such a cool car.

We paid £3.5k for ours. One of the later ones 96/97 build year. Spent around £2k on repairs in a year, lots of electrical faults & its now lying in bits in the garage waiting on me getting some time to go over the bits it needs doing.
No I dont think you'd get a good one for a grand. I may be wrong though, im not an expert in mini's!

the g/f had got a 1987 mini which has just been restored and pianted pink, cost her just under 2.4k

yes you could get one for 1k, but it will be a dog, as said if you want something good your looking at 2.5k upwards, and even then they arent mint

Which ever way you look at it there all old cars, designed 70yrs or so ago, they like to rust & once rust gets hold of them can be a pain to sort out, as the panels are all welded together & is structural, its cramped to work on & usually a job you think isnt much will amount to much more. I would say unless you buy one thats had a full restoration is going to need work & money thrown at it from day 1.
Ones like we have (sportpack mpi) fully restored to a high standard ive seen for sale for £8/9k.

Yes you can get a decent mini for under £1000, my bro just bought one for £650, its a 1275cc engine, but ya they are old cars and rust is gona be a factor, though this one has had quite a few welding jobs and some putty to the body work, but for £650, i dont think you can complain much, all that was wrong when he bought the car was that it had no hooter, and drove it over 100 miles home from where he bought it and no problems what so ever. just keep your eyes open all over the place.

It's the Mini's 50th Anniversary this year, don't think it was in development for 20 years before being released somehow

Development started in '55 they were launched in '59 
Have a look on the mini forums, plenty for your money thats decent. Your looking at an earlier carb model anyway so rust is sometimes actually less of an issue on them. The later ones used different cheaper metal and rust in different areas.
Parts are cheap and working on them is easy. Its a very simple engine so its pretty straight forward

I dont mind working on them, I have kept my e16se engine just incase.

my mrs wanted one a couple of years back, we went to a mini specialist in leigh to see a few, were going to spend about £3k on one, he had a few that had not long been restored for that, but when he said they would need restoring again in a couple of years it put me off, looked nice and the one we test drove was a 1300, pretty nippy, leather interior, quite liked it but too high maintenance.
she ended up with a hyundai coupe
