Whats the difference between that and the normal driving test? Ive had a read of the website and it just seems to me someone sits next to you while you go driving for and hour and a half, where you decide whats best etc?

Have I got it wrong....

I'm doing it, unless you are really not confident in driving I wouldn't recommend it, i'm severly fed up with it.

It's totally different to a normal driving test, you have to drive to their system and do everything that entails, like checking all 3 mirrors every 2 seconds.

You can't brake and change gear at the same time, you have to check all 3 mirrors and over your shoulder at every roundabout even if it's a mini one and you can see it's clear 360 degrees around you.

You can't use engine braking, you have to be in 3rd gear at 30, i'll add them as I think of more.

I was always told that a mini roundabout is treated the same as you would a junction I think that was by my bike instructors, and car instructor.

I don't get why you'd have to be in 3rd at 30? I know you do on hills, but surely the rest of the time it's just making the engine rev more and use more fuel

It's not 3rd specifically, it's the gear most appropriate for the speed, which in any car i've used recently ends up being 3rd.

More revs don't mean more fuel, when i'm out driving like that it actually uses less fuel.

Hmm, fair enough. I only go 30 in 3rd when going up/down hills or want the engine to warm up a bit faster to get the heating going

My mate said that he read somewhere that people have been getting better fuel consumption when they don't let the revs go below 2.5k when not accelerating or something like that.

Engine is running more efficiently at slightly higher revs, lots of cars also have fuel cut offs if you're over a certain rpm and not accelerating.

My car would be grunting and hopping along at 30 in 3rd

From what you said above John, sounds a fairly dangerous way of driving these days, I mean, who stops at roundabouts now?? Someone will just plough straight into the back of you

You don't have to stop at the roundabout as long as you can see it's clear.

I think it would be good for drivers who aren't too confident, at the original 5 week meeting bit they were saying how it made them more confident drivers and how they could now take corners quicker on country roads etc.

I'm by no means saying my driving is good but it certainly hasn't made me anymore confident and certainly hasn't speeded up my driving.

All the local IAM groups will do the theory course.

My closest one does 2 a year, starting in March and September for example.

That's a lot of crap as well btw, waste of 5 of my wednesday nights, could cover it in one easily.
