Been thinking of getting one of these for some time now but not sure it gonna work out very cost effective.
Coming from a Corca C 1.2sxi, the tax is gonna be slightly more, but my real concern is th fuel consumption.
TBH the 1.2 doesent seem that great on fuel, probably coz you have to rev it to go anywhere, but i dont cover many miles and the miles i do cover are towns and some A roads.
Whats the fuel economy like on one of these, an alternative would be the 1.8SRI but tax is way to steap on one of themand fuel economy does not seem great on that from what i have seen.

Honest MPG is likel to be around the late 30's early 40's unless you like long motorway drives sticking to 70-80mph for 30+ miles.
Trust me, when I got my Ibiza people were raving about 50+MPG. Yes I see that on a long run but in realilty I really see 40-44MPG average.

They way to think about it is would the 1.8 SRi get 40MPG in mixed driving, taking it easy and booting it? I doubt it.

With the price of diesel I really wouldn't bother, it's a big engine turbo and won't be massively better than your SXi
If you want economical get a 106 1.5D

im not really bothered if its more then my 1. sxi, but it will bother me if its a hell of alot of difference.
I supose its not really the time either with diesel prices the way they are.
Pow your probably right about the 1.8, my mate had the 1.8 Corsa and said the fuel was not great at all. low 30s i think for normal driving.
Maybe i should hang on for another 6 months or so.
I was all for getting a Fabia VRS some months back but then changed my mind at the last minute due to the upkeep of the interior.

My Astra is good on fuel, I think
On topic, I really want the 1.9CDTi (150), remapped ups the power and torque no end, they shift quite nicely. However, they are a commuting car, as OJC said for economy you need a small engine, if you really want to go cdti route what about Corsa 1.3cdti, or 1.7cdti comes in sri kit?
Par Example
Looks good, drives well, is quick, can be remapped if you really want to, fairly cheap tax, decent insurance etc etc

cheers for that danny,
Economy does not mean every thing to me, however im used to the economy of my 1.2sxi so i dont really want to pay out alot more.
I have looked at the Diesel corsas, but i dont think i would sell my one just to get another, though it would be faster nothing else would differ.
I want something faster then my current car, but to keep the prices im paying now, maybe im asking too much.
Cars i have looked at
Focus ltr Diesel
Astra 1.9cdti
Fabia VRS
Ford Fiesta Zetec s 1.6tdci
I know they are all diesels, but i dont think im gonna find a faster etrol car with a low tax band, good fuel eco, and reasonable insurance.

The Fiesta will be faster but not by that much. BenG knows all about those engines. FabiaVRS's on here are liked by people who have them/have driven them, people who havent always say 'Its a Skoda' (the same people who say a Boxster is a hairdressers car )
My personal standpoint is I dont like Ford's full stop, bad experiences with them has put me off.

What's your budget? My daily drive is a 4yr old 105bhp mk5 golf tdi. I get 500miles to a tank (50litres) which is normally about 49mpg depending how I drive.
Big car, enough toys; rain sensors, auto lights, good stereo, comfy, very safe. Can stick a £200 chip on for abit more power if you wanted.
High milers can be had for not much money now. Mines done nearly 110k and has only ever had tyres/brakes, oil changes and a cambelt

budget will be around £7k, would be nice to spend less obviously, but thats how much i can probably get an astra for, the others are cheaper, except the focus.

it might be about the same MPG as your 1.2 but the difference will be that you can go alot faster whilst getting that economy!

If you don't do much mileage then the 1.8 petrol will probably work out the same/cheaper in the long run.
Pay more for the diesel, fuel is more etc.
Unless your doing mega mileage then petrol can still be cost effective.
