Nikon 18 - 105mm f3.5 AF-S ED VR

Pros = Its a Nikon so I like the name, its cheaper its longer and has VR

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1028017

OR

Sigma 17 - 70mm f2.8

Pros, its wider than the Nikon , its faster but are sigma as good as nikon?

thats not a kit lens, a kit lens is on that you get with a kit ie Canon 40D + 17-85 IS lens
anywhoo the mikon for me 3.5 is fast enough and you have the VR with that so should be just as good as 2.8 (nearly)

I know what a kit lens is mate it was just an expression, I have a D200 that came as a body only and therefore I need a "kit lens" "walk about lens" what ever you want to call it to go with it

gonna need a new polorizer to fit it too

Think im gonna get the Sigma, 3.5 with VR is ok for speed if your subject is static but if its moving.... the Nikon is longer but I have a 70 - 300 I can use if I need the distance, Sigma is more expensive

I hate decision making

Looking at the facts there, I'd say the Nikon, extra length which could help cut down lens changes between this and the 70-300.

As Leighton said the difference in speed will pretty much be made up by the VR on the Nikon. Have a look further into the VR too. I know some Canon lenses have switchable IS for static or moving subjects and others are designed to detect if you're panning and switch automatically. Don't know if Nikon have come up with that idea yet

The 17-18mm difference at the short end will be barely anything

Easy decision imo
