plenty of you guys have experience of both, what are the pro's and cons of these 2 against each other?
i have a vtr at the minute and find myself mising the build quality of my corsa but love the handling of the saxo so i imagine its the same sort of situation with these 2 now? sacrifice some handling for quality?
the tunability of the let is calling me though, and boost! but then so is the handling of the clio!
insurance is 100 cheaper for the astra

i'd choose Gsi but have no experience with any of these two at all

i know only a test drive can confirm it for myself but im not looking at buying for another few months so dont want to get too excited by driving them or i'll end up jumping in with finance etc, i want to save the money myself

i heard the opposite tbh, in standard form will have the edge on an astra but that was from clio owners

my mates been out in a 204bhp clio 182 and he said there sloww, handles very well but just shite untill about 4k rpm untill the cam kicks in..
a tuned mk4 gsi is what id go for..

i'd probably run it for a while standard, i like the look of regal phase 1, £500= 234bhp and 274torques!
3500 in a 182 would probably see 187bhp

oh dear oh dear.. Astra Gsi's whilst being quick in a straight line there so boring to drive, many on here have had and sold on.
Fad had a mk4 GSi and went to a 182 so he has the most knowledge about the two and prefers the clio much more.

In standard form a clio will, but again thats from a clio owner, buy the astra, realise youve made the wrong decision and go for the Clio  , i had a 220 bhp ibiza cupra, quick in a straight line, boring as shit to drive though.

ah i dunno what to do! i feel like i want something a little more comfy and bargelike after driving a lowered saxo for a while, my girlfriend lives 50 miles away so most of my driving is motorways, the saxo is horrible for that!

I used to have a mk4 astra gsi running 220bhp, they are great of you want to go fast in a straight line, but you are doomed as soon as it sees a corner. I also have a friend with a clio 182 cup running 204bhp, as stated peviously it feels sluggish until it gets in to higher revs but it is great fun in the corners.
It all depends on wether you want to go quickly in a straight line or go quickly around corners

Speak to a lovely chap called Fad. He had a Mk4 GSi then moved to a 182. IIRC he prefers the 182 as it's more exciting, and a more involving drive than the GSi!

And the clio 182 wasn't getting away from it,
I can recomend the Gsi As I have one,
There isnt much similar about the clio and Astra though, so it's a case of making your own mind up,

I have no problem with corners in my Gsi 
I'm confused with everybody saying they are rubbish on corners,
I'd be interested to see how many of these people had eibach springs
5mm low at front 30mm at back, Makes the car twitchy and shit handling, also with standard shockers you have this problem
I have a proper kit on mine, and its pretty hard to drive, but it sticks like shit to a blanket.

Shep, a set of springs does not make a car handle well, it's just lower and feel's more planted It might feel a lot faster, but its liek sticking a set of spings on a corsa. Yes its lower, yes it feels much better, but overal it really isn't that much faster on a bend, and will require a lot more thrown at it to make it handle "well"
Put it this way, how many Mk4 GSi chassis have you seen doing competitivly well in motorsport????
Even Vauxhall used the saloon version of the Mk4 ans the short tail wasn't very good.

Its not grip Shep, it may feel like its on rails, but it has no driver involvement, no feedback, feels bigger than it is, turn in is comparatively slow, the back feels like its attached to the front with rubber bands.
I had eibachs and dunlop sps as well as toyos. Neither improved the situation, dunlops gave more grip in wet tho.
Its not so much that its not capable, its just it gives no rewards and is quite dull.
If you want one to cruise on Mways then they are awesome. Refined smooth engine, big comfy seats and built well

Well I'm pretty happy with mine and I've had a range of cars Including the best handling car of all time (imo) 205 gti 1.9
I admit that in standard form the astra is boring, As i nearly sold mine to get an evo IV
But I've had it a couple of years now and It's grown on me,
And VXR I wasnt trying to say springs make it handle, I was making the point that puting on a set of springs alone does nothing but lower the car.
I paid out on a decent suspension kit and shortened drop links and I can honestly say it's been the best thing I've done to the car,
It's more planted, can turn in quicker, carry more speed through the corners,
I like to drive it properly, hence the reason I stayed with 17" wheels when I fancied a change.
I guess the point is,...
Clio - Better handling out of the box
Astra - Better in every oter way.
