I knew it was either the water pump, or water core plug. 
 
Turned out to be the water pump. PHEW!! 
 
Off it goes to his garage on wednesday for a new water pump, and seen as the cambelts got to come off too, thats getting replaced at the same time.   
 
How much would this cost at an average garage?

I would say its ok. Really is only an hours job. parts i would guess around 70 quid.
