I do a min of 500 miles per week. I'm an old badger so insurance is not an issue and Tax is a one off payment so that is no big deal.

You can get bluemotions for less than 10k.
Its going to be pretty mundane, the engine is noisey and the interior is very very very cheap. Lots of hard shiny plastics.

i would get a passat for like 4grand at the most, and put loads of miles on it untill it breaks and keep your 6grand.
The 2003 cars still look like the do the job if you work in a office, and cruise on the motorway all day long at 90 mph!

What the didnt mention on topgear was the ££ value of diesel which went into each car
I bet the Jag had double the tank size of the VW

They did, but they didn't factor in cost of diesel at the end when deciding winners.
IIRC, Bluemotion was a 10gallon tank which = 37.854118litres
Which means the Jag has double the amount of diesel in it if 80lites is correct

You want to retain comfort and mid range if thats where your miles are likely to be had. Naturally you will be pulled towards diesel products, but there are plenty of petrol options out there with credible running costs.

I'd have thought a Smart Car is pretty cheap to run?!
My neighbour brought one for his wife to learn to drive in. £35 road tax, average 70mpg, £30 to fill up
