was thinking about getting a diesel next year, but then done some calculations...
if i do 300 miles a week(when i need to go to college/uni next year) so its only 45 weeks a year
price of petrol 89.9
price of diesel 105.9
if petrol does 40mpg and diesel 50 mpg
the saving is: TWO pounds a week. plus most decent diesels are over 1.6 so tax is more expensive(60 quid a difference for pre 2001) and insurance is the same. diesel car is likely to be more expensive to buy..
i dont think i will be gettin a diesel after all
moral is: do calculations how much u will be "saving" if u buy diesel cos u want a more economic car.

I have been saying this to folk for years
People dont think on the wider picture, they just think well i will do more mpg. END.
Saying that though, if you do alot of motorway driving it would have to be diesel. For the lower rev/high speed compaired to your petrol counterpart

I proved the other day your still over £200 better off a year, not taking into the fact of the cheaper insurance and tax.

You also have to consider servicing when doing all these calculations.
A diesel may have a 20,000 mile oil service interval where as your petrol may only be 10,000 miles.
Daymoon, in the diesel you wouldn't have to service it for 18months at 300miles a week.
In the petrol at 300 miles a week you'd need to service it twice in the 18 months.

the difference between diesel and petrol will be same though, maybe more as more people will be buying diesel cars.
i have to agree that if u do lots and lots of motorway driving then diesel is the way to go, but if u dont then petrol is the way to go.
i looked at diesel volvo s60 and petrols for my dad and the diesels are twice more expensive.. with the mileage he does (15k a year) it would be about 5 years before it would pay back... however u should consider the re-sale value.

i would service it once a year anyway. as i do with any car. plus oil for diesel engines is more expensive.. what about the parts if something goes wrong with the engine? i heard lots of people having to replace glow plugs which are not exactly cheap?

I worked out that in many cases it would be cheaper to run a petrol, the fuel is cheaper and because Diesel is in favour the prices of used petrol cars get hit harder. So equivalent Diesel may be a couple of grand more.

I would probably have a diesel even if I did less miles than I do currently.
Like the way they drive as much as anything

On 300 miles a week, yes its cheaper to have a petrol in the long run....
I'm doing about 700 a week so its definately cheaper to have a diesel.
I have been converted, torque is too much fun !

I am in agreeance with this tbh, although mine does tend to bog down when trying to pull away from lights, not the fastest off the mark. But I like the fact I can do 500 miles without visiting a petrol station.
And pow, our tank was costing over £65 to fill when it was up there Down to 101.9 round here I think now

I dont do high miles. But love the torque of a diesel, economy, engines are much stronger and easily tuned while still getting good mpg

the thing is you would struggle to get 40mpg out of a petrol over a long run without driving at seriously low speeds
I get 550 miles to 47 litres and drive the car considerably hard
Plus sub 7 secs to 60 and 210 BHP and 310lbs/ft of torque makes an entertaining drive

my dad gets more mpg out of his 1.4 104bhp rover 25 than i do with 1.0 corsa. and he doesnt hang around.
iirc last time he got 380 miles for 40 pounds.
edit: u got 55 mpg
my dad 40 mpg.

to be fair you need to go like for like
if your looking at 130BHP derv then you will be looking at 2.0 or above petrol
Therefore you wont see 40 mpg and road tax will be higher on the petrols

Yer but i mean does he mean the 1.4 ibiza or the 1.8t cupra r? if so its going to be cheaper then the Cupra as its slower....
Dont get me wrong, im not anti diesel i think they are brilliant, i just dont think people figure out how much it costs them.
If i lived in europe, i wouldnt even look at a petrol

Performance for performance, Diesels are cheaper to tax anyway??
Mine is only £110 a year (roughly) which is the same as my 1.0 corsa was!
Diesels in general go alot further without servicing as people have said
I get about 120 miles to £10 in my ibiza, back in the corsa when petrol was around 85p a litre i was only getting 100miles to a tenner.
So you can see how much cheaper my ibiza is to run compared to a 3 cylinder corsa - and I get 165bhp to play with instead of 50
