Poll: Crazy Ideas... what to do...
  Sell 106 Gti - buy Honda S2000.
  Keep 106 gti - buy Honda S2000.
Keep 106 gti - spend a bit more on it making it awesome, i.e. more power etc.
  Buy something else... (say what?)

While travelling I'm constantly pondering on what to do when I return to the uk... about cars.

obv I'll be fairly broke, but may be able to afford a few grand towards a new car. However, if I do get a job fairly soon after my return it'll make the situation on money a lot easier.

What are people's opinions on Honda S2000's? Do they handle well standard or not? I found some stats showing they're quite heavy, do 1/4 mile in 14.5 (which isn't spectactular), no LSD as standard etc...

How easy are S2000's to tune? what's possible? Do they require a lot of work to make them handle well / go quickly?

I want a car that I can do at least 8 min 30 round the ring in. I know I could get my 106 gti to that pace quite easily... and think the thought of my 106 dominating so many cars round there being hilarious...

However, I really want to get a more grown up car and the fact is, they'll be a limit of how quick a 106 will ever be. i.e. Even with a 180 bhp engine, stripped out with a cage it'll be pushed to its limit to achieve 8 mins 30 and so a car that does low 8's (M3 CSL, Porsche etc) will still beat it around.

So ... What is a honda S2000 capable of realistically?

Sorry for my ramblings...

note my car currently does the ring in 9 min 14...

so gaining about 40 bhp and shedding about 150 kg would be the aim for the better time.

i.e. roughly power / weight going from 155 ish bhp per tonne currently to like 220 bhp per tonne.

i read that he s2000 (latest one) was 0-100 in 15.5 seconds

they are good cars i guess, not driven one tho.

if you want to get an all and all out race car for the track why not look at an elise or vx?

vx220 turbo is too expensive Chris and elise or vx220 N/A is not fast enough in a straight line to set good lap times.

I wouldn't say that; they are good on fuel and cheap to service. My mum has been using her's as a daily drive for 3 years now and is looking to change it for a newer one!

My advice would be to keep the 106 for a year or so and save up some cash for a better car.

not being funny but why are you so bothered about the ring time

Its not as if its your daily route

Also if yiou got a car that does it in under 8mins 30 how much of the time would you realisticlty use that performance on the open road

it's a good benchmark for a cars realistic performance, taking into account acceleration, top speed and handling.

What the fuck does it matter what the performance is on the open road? this isn't a fast and the furious movie, I'm not Paul Walker and I do not street race like a 17 year old child.

.

I thought it was only Jap ones that had LSD's standard interesting....

Yours looks spot on mate, I like the slight front lip, transforms the overall look of the car (as otherwise front lacks a little something) - shame I'm not back for a while yet.

Is Nismo's S2000 sold yet?

I have a question...

How low is the front bumper to the ground? Same for standard cars?

Looking on Pistonheads they are cheap as chips...I like them. Only problem I have is where I live our driveway hasn't had the kerb dropped...so it's a bump up the very high kerb job to park up. This doesnt really bother me as the car only gets used once or twice a week at weekends mainly, through the week I use the train.

I would say the kerb is a good say 6" high... Would the S2000 clear this?

I would defintately be after a black model with red interior

I'd say sell the 106 and buy somthing different. An S2000 is about 6-8k?? Theres quite a broad range of cars that you can get with that money.

However...there is somthing hugely satisfying about having a kinda 'normal' car that can keep up with much quicker cars...so maybe spend less on the car and more on modifying.

Rory,

Paul, i'd say sell up and get the s2k if you can justify the extra folding. Although, it'd be, what, 4K on top of what you get for the gti?

I can think of a lot better things to spend 4large on than a car.

For the price of a good S2000 you can get an Impreza STi with PPP. Over 300bhp from the start, easily capable of keeping up with an M3 around a track. Decent every day car as well.

No, someone drove to see it today and the highest they wanted to offer was 5500.

I dont actually need to sell it, i just would like a bigger car for work and something the misus could share.

Im not going to drop that much just to get rid, id rather keep it until the day comes that i need more than 2 seats, and i dont want that day to come just yet
