There can't be any practical reason - only from a marketing point of view so it is 'obvious' whats a petrol and whats a diesel.

Probably makes it easier for people at dealerships/parts etc if a customer comes in and says they have a 1.9 they know it's a diesel straight away?

Yeah but theres the likes of 1.9 petrol 205's. The moral of the story is "Buy a petrol becuase they sound better"

My 1.7D Combo is fairly nippy, wish it was a TD though.
Not sure why they are odd numbers on older cars and even numbers on newer cars though.

No it's not

I go to work in one every day and drive it regularly and nippy is not one of the words i'd use to describe it.

Ive driven a 1.7D Combo once ans swore i would never drive 1 again. Not if i was in a hurry anyway.

Saying 1 is slow is an understatement.

My girlfriend has a 1.7d. And tbh its not quick but it does the job giving it death arounud town. Never attempted to go on a dual carridge way in it or anything, only to the shops. But its quicker than a 1.0 and a little bit better on fuel, whislt i think being alot more tougher!
