We've changed thousands of prices today, most things have gone down about 3p to every £1. Probably would notice the difference on a full shop.

Aye, when you say it as £2.50 from a £100 item it really isn't all that great.
Or £25 from £1000.. Thats even worse. People are stupid

tbf a lot of places are slashing prices on items by quite a lot and just saying "ow we have slashed vat to make it x ammount"
for instance comet have an xbox premium for £166 due to the vat drop, well the vat didnt make it drop £34, but it makes for good advertising, and most customers dont question it any further than the claimed advert.

My dad actually held out on buying a new private plate for the new car till the vat dropped. Just so he could save £4.20.

Trouble is, the general public are stupid and will believe they are saving money so will spend a few quid more, which is exactly what they want to happen.

Yet the cost to small (actually all) businesses will be such that a load more go out of business and the economy ends up further in the shitter.

We don't really have the option tho, most of our coin mechs won't take copper so cans at 59p ain't gonna work
TBF tho when your product is cheap, it's only gonna be pennies difference so most of the everyday things you buy won't be affected. Nipping to the little sandwich bar round the corner, they've been on their arse for the past few months cos the media's making everyone scared about the credit crunch, making people tighten their belts, the sandwich bar owners aren't gonna take 3 or 4 pence off the price of a sarnie, they're gonna cash in on it to try and dig em out the shit.
Anyway, Cheers Gordon, every little helps

I got £2.48 off my coat today. The laughable thing is that it may have been the plan to stimulate the economy, but I was going to buy it the other day but it wasn't cold enough to justify it. So the government has actually made less out of me.

I got £1.41 off my shopping today. Better in my pocket than the governments
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

The way certain small retailers round here are doing it is they are keeping everything at original prices and keeping a calculator next to the till and just taking 2.5% off at the till, seems easier and less costly

So they should have lifted the heavy tax on gas-guzzling-CO2-emitting cars so global warming is accelerated and it got cold quicker
This is the same as say, a 2p drop in petrol - that saves me 60p.

Dropping VAT from 17.5% to 15% is not 2.5p in the pound! its 2.1p in the pound difference;
If you pay £1.00 for something then the orginal price - VAT is not (100-17.5) 82.5% of the final value ie £0.825; It is actually £1.00/1.175=£0.851
if you then pay 15% VAT instead of 17.5%; £0.851*1.15 = £0.978
so a 2.5% drop in VAT is only worth £0.022 in your pocket per previous £1.00
so on a £100.00 purchase @ 17.5% VAT you'll now spend £97.80 at 15% - I don't know about anyone else but a £2.20 saving per £100.00 won't push me to spend anymore or less
