Just wanted to answer a few questions as its something im interested in.
Im not looking at becoming a DJ or producer but its just something that interestes me .
1. Dj's - They have a hugeeeee collection of songs etc so do they legaly buy it all....I mean some of the underground tracks etc such as bassline nowdays some of the DJ's are spinnin the tracks out in clubs etc, but where do they get the rights from etc.? And I know the mainstream DJ's get sent tracks by upcoming artists who want to be promoted but what about non mainstream DJ's?
2 Some DJ's such as Jamie Duggan / Shaun banger scott etc are very good and they often do remixs of songs themselves etc but is it legal to remix any old song and play it in clubs or do they have to gain rights to the original song as some songs used are very old.
Just a couple of things ive wondered lol

from wikipedia
"Copyright Implications
Because remixes may borrow heavily from an existing piece of music (possibly more than one), the issue of intellectual property becomes a concern. The most important question is whether a remixer is free to redistribute his or her work, or whether the remix falls under the category of a derivative work according to (for example) United States copyright law. Of note are open questions concerning the legality of visual works, like the art form of collage, which can be plagued with licensing issues.
There are two obvious extremes with regard to derivative works. If the song is substantively dissimilar in form (for example, it might only borrow a motif which is modified, and be completely different in all other respects), then it may not necessarily be a derivative work (depending on how heavily modified the melody and chord progressions were). On the other hand, if the remixer only changes a few things (for example, the instrument and tempo), then it is clearly a derivative work and subject to the copyrights of the original work's copyright holder."

I use to run an online radio and it was a pain in the arse. You had to provide information for how many listened to each song, where they we're listening from, average listening hours per day. Bad times
But yeah, MCPS-PRS alliance & PPLUK will cover DJ's and producers.

This is not legal, no. How old are we talking? If I remember correctly anything over 50 years old can be used towards ANYTHING.

95% of the stuff I play when I'm DJing is legally bought and the rest downloaded
No idea about the broadcasting licensing side of it though as I do it through a mates company but guessing I don't have one

If its club DJ'ing you will need a separate license for your self.

Again, this can be found on PPLUK website

So if I stopped using the downloaded stuff and only used my CD's I wouldn't need the licence?

But what about tracks that are obtained 'ilegally'
I mean some songs you cant pay and download off itunes, they HAVE to be sourced another way such as smaller artists and unknowns.

They'd never find out where you got them if you had the license. Nor would they particularly care. Aslong as they're of good quality you should always be fine

Just talking to one of them now...
Shelly says:
got a question for you
Shelly says:
you know when you remix a song of someone elses, do you have to get permission from them? or can you just do it?
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
usually they ask you for a remix
Shelly says:
so what if you wanted to remix one and they didnt ask you?
Shelly says:
do you have to get permission from them
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
(got a phone call)
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
eh
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
i did a couple of rmxes for fun
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
like opus 3 its a fine day
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
(which got released in the end)
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
coldplay - x&y
Shelly says:
cool
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
and rmb spring
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
and did the bootleg with ocean dr blvd and endless wave
Shelly says:
so you could remix them without permission as long as you dont release them, unless you do get it
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
but tiesto and benno/rank 1 (original producers) liked it so much so they used it on compilations and stuff
Shelly says:
ahh i understand now
Leon Bolier - is an uncle again! says:
yep u cant release without permission
Shelly says:
cool
Hope that helps

I DJ & Produce you dont need a license to DJ the club/bar should already have a license so that should cover yourself. Producing a remix of a old track is prefectly ok as long as your not going to sell it yourself & make money from it. Hand it out to other DJ's or even send it to the original record label it was released on & you might get lucky.
As for buying music theres loads of sites out there for legal downloads, just try & stay away from the illegal stuff if your playing out, you might play a track which noone has & you'll get into abit of shit HA!
I use these sites for buying tracks
www.beatport.com
www.audiojelly.com
www.djdownload.com

Where did you get the songs from though? Do producers send them you etc?
Its just if I bought some equipment and used a program such as virtual dj and then used all my songs of itunes (and a lot of them were acquired for free) would I get in shit?

Well either you got them on promo or your downloading illegally. Not going to give you a eassy about downloading illegal tunes but I will say this. I do produce & have a few tracks out on labels it's not a very well paid path but it is nice folk buying your tunes if they like them rather then downloading illegally. Alot of producers make music for a living & for people to download their tunes illegally which they have spent alot on time on is pretty wank TBH. If your caught playing a unreleased track on a big label & the record label owner hear's you playing then yeah your going to be in the shit lol!

Some producers will send over promos yeah thats fine as they usually come from the label. You can get away with playing illegally downloaded tunes yeah don't get me wrong, but if you get caught in the act by either the producer or record label then anything could happen.

majority of mine is sent to me from producers, or downloaded off blogs where the producer has sent them into to get some PR & the tunes played. If a tune has been released, i would rarely play it. I did have to be careful once though, we did a boat party with D.Ramirez, Mark Knight & Dave Spoon and i had to check on beatport & dj download what had actually been released so i didnt play anything naughty, not that they would say anything anyway.....cant help it if someone 'gives' me a promo cd?

i have this set up

http://www.jbsmusic.co.uk/view/1166/
2 x Poineer CDJ-1000 MK3 + Pioneer DJM 600.
Also a Cambridge Audio amp & some KEF speakers (cant remember the model)
Burn all my tracks to cd and yes i have a cd case that cold 240 cds, each cd has around 7-10 tracks on. Not really hard to find stuff as the newest stuff at the back, older stuff at the front Plus playing out 2/3 times a week you just learn what tracks are on what cd, and where.
