Which is "better"
Astra VXR
MkV Golf Edition 30
Guy i work with is a VW nut and thinks its the best hot hatch around at the moment.. i said the VXR would certainly whoop it for power and speed but he keeps coming up with the old argument "Yeah but its still a Vauxhall"

Golf = Yawn
Astra = Yawn
Civic type R is more driver orientated imo so thats the better hot hatch, high revving, good handling, well balanced car, more track influenced

The ed30's are rated extremely highly.
I know that would be my choice anyway

:lol
Never actually driven a VXR then
If Civic Type R's are so good on track, why do they not compete in Dunlop sportsmax challange.... VXR's, MEgans, BMW M3's, Seat Leons, VW Golfs, 350Z etc.... (B class being Clio Sports, Mini cooper S etc)
Oh, of which the Astra VXR has won the championship a few times already.....
VXR is a good track car, fast on the road, but overall for ROAD use only, the Golf is the better all rounder. Softer suspension, more comfort etc...
VXR is a drivers car.
How anyone could yawn over a modern hot hatch compared to a civic does make me chuckle

Tell him he's a wannabe snob becuase a VXR is hardly a step up from Vauxhall these days. Quality of build is the same, and for him to say "its still a vauxhall" shows he's a badge whoare, therefore blinkered.
In fact, i just wouldn't bother with the conversation to him as he's clearly a goon. Tell him to pull his head out his bottom and actually try driving ether car, opposed to watching Top Gear and making his complete opinion on what Clarkson says

Looks better "and everything". Are you basing that upon anything other than opinion?

golf could be the best hatch in the world, its still one of the most unexciting looking cars ever to be made, reviews said its not made as well as the mk4. Dynamicly meant to be superior, but if hes basing it on it "its still a vauxhall" then hes a nob. A vw is hardly a fucking bently, it maybe good but its "still a vw" tbh.

Its got 140b.h.p.
CTR's IMHO are very over rated

My XSi keeps up with CTR's The new ones are a massive disappointment. Like the EP3's though for the fact you can beat the living shit out of it and it'll keep going. But by no means the top hatch anymore.

Golf is horrendous, all of them. Yawntastic boats that are good at nothing. People are blinkered by badge snobbery.
The Golf isn't fast, it doesn't handle spectactly, the specs are crap unless you want to pay 25k for full spec car. The build quality is getting worse while Vauxhall is improving all the time.
VW have been living on the quality of the brand name rather than the quality of the car since the Mk4 Golf.

Owns an A3 (not even an S3), and thinks the VXR is rubbish
Almost as blinkered as Kerry

I can't believe I just read that as well, EP3 was good in it's day, but now it's miles behind the competition, Astra will leave it for dead in a straight line and I'm going to say that in the twisties it's just as good handling wise. The new FN2 is a piece of dog turd, they have tried to soften it up a bit and managed to piss off Honda fans as a result, it's still a decent car just needs more oooommmpffff.
If you want the best car on the market for mid range hot hatch you have to have the R26 out of the box.

Nail - Head...
Gotta say VW build quality is steadily getting worse.. and iirc from looking at some of those who's most reliable, vauxhall are actually not far behind VW, and FORD are above VW......
From personal experience the edition 30 Golf is probably the best of the Mk5's but its nothing special..

i do love vw, but like you say i dont think they are as solid as they would like to think.
I know a lad with a mk4 gti and its had waterpump problems, gear linkage, electrical, pipes blowing off the turbo etc

if it was my £££, and they were the same price, i would go for the golf, as i love the mk5 gti (one of the few vw i really like)
saying that, if there was the oppertunity of a astra nurburgring, i would go for that

Thats low for a cammed VTS. My VTS made 133bhp on breathing mods only
